Coach Schafer Reaches 300 Career Wins for EHS

Effingham High School's Jeff Schafer reached his 300th career coaching victory as the Hearts defeated Greenville 38-21 in the second evening of the EHS Girls Round Robin Basketball Tournament.

The Hearts trailed 7-4 in the opening quarter but pushed ahead 20-13 at halftime as Jantzen Michael knocked in a three-pointer and a regular basket. The Hearts then had a 12-1 third period run.

Shelby Myers led the Hearts in scoring with eight points while Michael added seven points, seven rebounds and five assists. Brittany Beals had seven rebounds and Sidney Webster five assists.

It was the opener for the Hearts in their own tournament. Greenville drops to 0-2.

Coach Schafer's overall record for his career is 300 victories and 176 defeats.

In the opening game of the evening, Vandalia downed Centralia 44-31. The Vandals were led by Hosick with 19 points. Vandalia has a 2-0 tourney record. Centralia was led by Mays with 11 points and drops to 1-1 in the meet.

The tournament continues tonight as Greenvillefaces Centralia at 6 followed by Effingham taking on Pana at 7:30.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Two games were contested Tuesday evening in the Little Illini Conference Tournament. Flora was a 52-41 winner over Paris. Marshall then downed Lawrenceville 48-33.

The tourney continues tonight as Newton faces Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. followed by Olney taking on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7:30. The tournament comes to a close Thursday.

 

Highland Tournament

Four games were contested Tuesday evening at the 29th Annual Highland Tournament.

Iin the opener Troy Triad downed Nokomis 50-36. Belleville Althoff won over Okawville 48-45. Belleville West beat Nashville 46-25 and Highland claimed a 63-50 win over Taylorville.

The tournament continues tonight as Hillsboro faces Trenton Wesclin at 5 followed by Breese Central against Breese Mater Dei at 6:30 and Troy Triad meeting Belleville Althoff at 8.
