Vandalia and Centralia were opening round winners at the 14th Annual Effingham High School Girls Round Robin Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

Both teams tallied 49 points in beating their opponents. Vandalia downed Greenville 49-42. Greenville held an 11-8 opening quarter lead but the Vandals came back to lead 21-18 at halftime and by one point going into the final quarter. The Vandals then put together a 20-14 final period.

In the second contest, Centralia edged Pana 49-42. Mays tallied 21 points for the winners. Pana pushed ahead 12-5 after one quarter and led 24-21 halftime. The Panthers still held a lead, 32-31, going into the final quarter. Mays scored 10 of her points in the final period.

Tonight's games feature Centralia taking on Vandalia at 6 followed by Effingham facing Greenville at 7:30.

 

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis ran into a tough opponent in Breese Central and fell 47-44 in action at the 29th Annual Highland Tournament Monday evening.

Breese Central took a 14-7 opening quarter lead on the Shoes. T-town came back with a slight edge to pull within 25-19 at halftime. Central held a 39-32 lead going into the final period. T-town mounted a comeback and outscored Central 12-8 but couldn't get over the hump.

Drees led the Shoes with 13 points. T-town banged home six three-pointers compared to one for Central. Bueker had three trifectas and finished with eight points.

In the opening contest, Hillsboro beat Carlyle 68-44 before Trenton Wesclin won over O'Fallon 52-38. Breese Mater  Dei finished out the evening by beating Salem 53-47.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton came back from an opening round defeat to beat Edwards County (Albion) 61-34 in consolation bracket play at the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

The Eagles had a 21-9 second period run to lead 33-13 at halftime. Kerner tallied 21 points, connecting on seven field goals that included four trifectas, and was three of three at the line. Hartrich chipped in with eight.

The Eagles are now 13-9 on the season and will be back in LIC Tourney action Wednesday against Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m.

In the second contest, Olney bounced Robinson 57-16.
