At Mattoon

Three-pointers were the difference as Mattoon edged Effingham 39-35 in Apollo Conference competition Thursday evening.

Effingham held a one point lead heading into the final quarter. Sophomore Ivy Nichols nailed a three-pointer and that put the Green Wave ahead for the rest of the contest.

"This was a really hard-fought game," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "It was a battle for 32 minutes. It just came down to a couple plays and that was the difference. They hit a couple big threes. We had a couple of possessions up two and just could not make a shot to give us a more than one posesssion lead. To their credit, they made a few plays at the end.

"I thought Maddy Field had one of her best games as a varsity player. The bottom line is we just have to make a few more plays in crunch time and we win."

Field finished with 16 points to lead the Hearts. Scoring leader Jantzen Michael was held to three points by sophomores Nichols and Avery Jackson who both finished with nine points to lead the Green Wave.

The Hearts drop to 0-7 in the conference, 10-10 overall. Mattoon improves to 3 -2 in the conference, 13-7 overall.
