St. A Frosh/Soph Beat Mattoon

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Mattoon in freshman/sophomore boys basketball action Wednesday evening and sent the Green Wave home with two losses.

In the freshman contest, the Bulldogs claimed a 52-39 victory. Clayton Helmink scored eight points as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Helmink finished with 12 while Alex Deters led the way with 18.

In the sophomore game, St. Anthony was a 60-51 winner. The Bulldogs held a 28-22 halftime lead and a 48-34 lead going into the final period.

Alex Beesley tallied 15, Drew Gibson 13 and Jack Nuxoll 13 for the winners.
