COWDEN -- Teutopolis finished second in the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Freshman/Sophomore Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.
T-town edged Alton Marquette 35-34. Marquette held a 16-15 halftime lead but T-town came back with a 10-8 third period run and held on for the win. T-town was led by Lauren Hemmen with nine points.
In the semifinal game, T-town blasted Robinson 51-12. T-town held Robinson scoreless in the first quarter. Bailey Schumacher scored 18, Christy Hoene 12 and Shanna Niebrugge 10.
Pana claimed the championship game over the Shoes 45-40. The Panthers stepped out to a 20-14 opening quarter lead. T-town came back to knot the score at 27-27 at halftime then pushed ahead 38-30 going into the final period. Pana rallied with a 15-2 run to pull out the victory.
T-town was led by Schumacher with 19 and Niebrugge with 14.
In freshman action, Effingham picked up a win and suffered two losses. The sophomore squad lost its opener then won the second game before falling in the final contest.
In freshman action, Robinson edged the Hearts 28-25. EHS held a 23-21 lead going into the final quarter before Robinson came back with a 7-2 run. The Hearts were led by Martin and Siebert with seven points each.
In the second contest, Alton Marquette was a 61-25 winner over the Hearts. Siebert scored 12.
In the final game, the Hearts won over Ramsey 30-15. Taylor scored 12. The Hearts are now 5-4 on the season.
In sophomore play, Pana was a 30-24 over the Hearts. EHS held a 13-11 first half lead. Pana came back with a 9-2 lead in the third period and edged the Hearts 10-9 in the final quarter. Conkling led EHS with nine points.
In the second game, Effingham was a 39-24 winner over Ramsey. The Hearts trailed 15-14 at halftime then had a 14-4 third period run. Greene and Conkling tallied 11 points each.
The final game went to Alton Marquette over Effingham 37-34. Marquette held a 15-6 opening quarter lead. Effingham came back with a 28-22 second half run only to fall short. Conkling led the Hearts with 10 points. EHS is now 4-4 on the season.
