EHS Downs Newton, Area Girls Roundup

Newton High School came calling at Effingham and fell to the Hearts 43-30 in girls basketball competition Monday evening.

EHS edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead. The Hearts then went on a tear in the second period with a 14-2 run to lead 24-11 at halftime. The two teams played to a 19-19 tie in the second half, but that second quarter propelled the Hearts to the win.

Jantzen Michael connected on six field goals, half of those from three-point range, and was two of two at the line for 17 points as the Hearts lone player in double figures. She connected on all three of her trifectas in the second quarter run.

Newton was led by Kerner with 15 points on two field goals, two of those three-pointers, and five of six at the line. The Eagles drop to 12-6 on the season.

At Flora

There's a first time for everything and Flora had a first Monday evening by edging Teutopolis, 35-33.

The Wooden Shoes eased out to a 5-4 opening quarter lead then put together a 14-5 run and seemed on the way to victory with a 19-9 halftime lead. Flora and T-town played to a 9-9 tie in the third period.

The Wolves then rallied to knot the score at 33-33. Crimson Jones then put back a shot at the buzzer to give Flora the victory.

The Wolves were led by Jones with 17 points. T-town was led by Chelsey Hardiek with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Schmidt added nine boards.

Dieterich played host to Hutsonville/Palestine in a non-conference contest and claimed a 58-43 victory.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 15-10 opening quarter lead then broke the game open with a 21-6 second period surge. Three players hit double digits for the Maroons. Mallorie Vahling led the way with 19 points and pulled down a whopping 25 rebounds. Courtney Flach added 16 points, six assists and five steals. Kallee Heuerman tallied 12 points and had six boards.

Dieterich is now 13-5 on the season.

Brownstown/St. Elmo picked up a 45-38 victory over Altamont in action Monday evening.

Altamont led 10-5 after the opening quarter but BSE came back to lead 21-20 at halftime then had a 12-4 third period run.

Pruett tallied 12 and Brown nine for the winners. Altamont was led by Duckwitz with 12.

CORL led 31-18 at halftime and never looked back. Three players scored in double figures, Cole with 18, Masholh with 11 and Agan with 10. CHBC was led by Johnson with 12 and Ward with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Neoga picked up a 71-47 victory over Shelbyville/Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor in non-conference play Monday evening.

Madison Butler led the Indians with 24 points and 10 assists. Olivia Ott scored 15, EC Thies 14 and Jaycie Roy 14. Butler, Roy and Ott had eight rebounds each. Shelbyville/Stew-Stras/Windsor was led by Schuler with 16 and Goralski with 11. S/SS/W drops to 8-9.

Neoga is now 15-3 on the season.
