St. Anthony Girls Capture Seventh at Mattoon Christmas Tourney

MATTOON -- Effingham St. Anthony finished seventh in the Mattoon Girls Christmas Basketball Tournament Monday.

The Bulldogs defeated Decatur MacArthur 41-34. The two squads played to a 12-12 opening quarter tie. Emma Richards led the Bulldogs with eight of those 12 points.

In the second quarter, MacArthur edged ahead with a 12-9 run to lead 24-21 at halftime. Megan Nuxoll scored all nine of St. Anthony's points in the quarter.

The Bulldogs then came back with a 12-3 third quarter run as Emily McDevitt nailed two three-pointers and finished with eight points in the period. The Bulldogs then connected on their free throws in the final quarter to put the contest away.

Richards tallied 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Nuxoll added 14 points and six boards.

"We played great defense in the second half, holding them to 10 points," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We played with more fire and intensity. Emma played an amazing game at both ends of the floor."

The Bulldogs improve to 10-8 on the season.

In the championship game, Galesburg beat Salem 68-52. The third place contest went to Mattoon over Vandalia 55-46. Sullivan won the fifth place game over Olney 66-56.

Members of the All-Tournament Team were Shali Florine (Galesburg), MVP, Megan Nuxoll (St. Anthony), Dearria Watson (Salem), Brittin Boyer (Sullivan), Avery Jackson (Mattoon), Emma Meyer (Vandalia), Emily Neuhauser (Sullivan), Raina Gully (Galesburg), Sierra Thompson (Mattoon), Kailey Beer (Salem) and Lexi Daniels (Galesburg).
