Flora Edges St. A at Vandalia, Bulldogs, Altamont Will Play For Third Place

The Flora Wolves outpointed the St. Anthony Bulldogs 16-11 in the final period to win their Monday night battle at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, 55-50. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The Bulldogs battled back from an early 10-point deficit and eventually led the game by five points before the Wolves came back for the victory. Flora was up 17-14 after one quarter and 28-26 at halftime before St. Anthony knotted the game at 39-39 after three quarters. The Bulldogs were plagued by late turnovers that hurt any chance at a win.

With the loss, St. Anthony slipped to 3-1 in the tournament and will play in the third place game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

Flora is 4-0 in the tournament and will take on Greenville in the championship game at 8 p.m.

St. Anthony lost despite shooting 53% from the field, making 20 of 38 shots. The Bulldogs hit seven of 10 foul shots, but committed 17 turnovers including eight in the critical fourth quarter. The Bulldogs hit three of seven three-point shots. 

Flora made 16 of 33 shots for 48%, and made 16 of 21 foul shots. The Wolves committed 14 turnovers, but only four in the fourth period, and made seven of 17 three-point shots.

Kyle Hartke led St. Anthony with 13 points, Derek Rios scored 12 points and Andrew Gardewine scored 11 points, all in the second half.

Flora's Bryce Pearce scored 27 points, to give him 109 points in the tournament with one game to go.

St. Anthony will play Altamont for third place at 6:30 p.m.

In the opening game of the day, Altamont downed South Central 57-49. The Indians edged out to a 13-6 opening quarter lead but South Central rallied and took a 21-20 halftime lead. Then it was Altamont's turn to produce and the Indians moved ahead 38-33 going into the final period. Altamont maintained control for the victory.

Armstrong connected on eight field goals and was three of four at the line for 24 points to lead the winners. K. Wolf tallied 13 points, hitting three field goals and six of six at the line.

South Central was led by Harmeier with 11 points and Hill with nine.

In the next contest, Maroa-Forsyth defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown 65-54. Maroa outpointed the Bombers in every quarter but the final period.

Maxey tallied 17, Feezel 15 and Hardiman 10 for the Bombers. Maxey connected on three trifectas.

Shelbyville then handed South Central a 65-56 loss. The score was tied at 15-15 after the opening quarter. Shelbyville then put together a 29-21 run over the next two quarters and had a one point edge in the final epriod.

South Central was led by Langley with 19 points.

Vandalia then bounced St. Elmo/Brownstown 65-39 in the next contest. SEB led 16-12 after one period but the Vandals roared back with a 38-18 run over the next two quarters.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Maxey with 11 points and Oberlrink with 10.

The final game went to Greenville over Pana 62-42.

Today's finals include St. Elmo/Brownstown vs. Pana for ninth place at 3 p.m., South Central taking on Maroa-Forsyth at 3:30 p.m. for seventh place, Vandalia against Shelbyville at 5 p.m. for fifth place, Altamont taking on St. Anthony for third place at 6:30 and Flora against Greenville for the championship at 8.
