EHS Downs Paris at Charleston Tourney To Move Into Title Contest

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School captured a 48-39 win over Paris in the Charleston Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament this morning.

The Hearts handed Paris its first loss of the tournament. The Tigers were 3-0 coming into the meeting against the 2-1 Hearts. Now both teams finish pool play 3-1. Since EHS beat Paris, the Hearts moved into the championship game and will face Charleston, which finished 4-0 in the Red Pool, at 7 p.m. today.

In the second game today, TAylorville beat Rantoul 72-35 putting the Tornadoes in the fifth place game at 4 p.m.

In Saturday action at the tournament, the Hearts lost to Taylorville 36-32 and defeated Rantoul 54-41.

In the opening game Saturday against Taylorville, the two teams were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter and EHS moved ahead 14-13 at halftime. The Tornadoes then came back with a 14-9 third period run and the Hearts couldn't recover.

Shelby Myers led EHS with 12 points.

In the second contest, EHS stepped out to a 15-7 opening quarter lead on Rantoul and led 24-20 at halftime. The Hearts then had a big final period surge.
Jantzen Michael led EHS with 23 points.

"We had a much better day of basketball today after getting thumped at Taylorville," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "IF we execute a little better and don't go 3 of 13 from the line, we beat them. We definitely made a step forward today."

In other Saturday games, Rantoul edged Charleston JV 49-48, Charleston won over Putnam County 64-38, Danville defeated Decatur Eisenhower 51-30, Paris nabbed a 55-38 win over Charleston JV, Decatur Eisenhower beat Putnam County 44-41 and Charleston downed Urbana 64-39.
