Big Third Quarter Lifts Bulldogs Over Hornets

A big third quarter lifted the St. Anthony Bulldogs to a 57-38 win over the Cowden-Herrick Hornets in National Trail Conference action Tuesday in Cowden. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

It was anybody's game during the first half. Cowden-Herrick led 7-2 early, but St. Anthony led 14-12 by the end of the first quarter. The Hornets battled back, though, and the game was tied 22-22 at halftime.

Then came the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Cowden-Herrick 22-7 in the period, doubling their first half point total and led 44-29 at the end of the period. St. Anthony outscored C-H 13-9 in the fourth quarter to account for the winning margin.

St. Anthony won despite season-long shooting difficulties. The Bulldogs posted the win while shooting 28% from the field, putting up a whopping 58 shots while making just 16 of them. St. Anthony did shoot well at the foul line, making 21 of 28 for 75%. An uptempo attack resulted in 16 turnovers, but St. Anthony pulled down 41 rebounds to 20 for Cowden-Herrick. The Bulldogs made one three-pointer in six tries.

Cowden-Herrick hit 13 of 36 shots for 36% and made nine of 15 foul shots for 60%. The Hornets were plagued with turnovers, giving the ball up 25 times, and made three of 17 three-point shots.

Andrew Gardewine led St. Anthony with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Derek Rios scored 10 points with five boards, Kyle Hartke scored nine points with four rebounds, and Zach Gardewine and Chandler Martelli each scored seven points. Gardewine added six rebounds but left in the second half after rolling an ankle. Also for St. Anthony: Kyle Bourgeois three, Braden Puckett, Jeff Niebrugge and Drew Gibson two each, and Nick Grunloh one.

Colton Burrus led Cowden-Herrick with 15 points, Konnor Blackerby scored 10 points, and Trey Pasley scored eight points with seven rebounds. Also, Dylan Barnes scored three points and Kyle Black two points.

St. Anthony improved to 6-4 on the season, while Cowden-Herrick dropped to 8-5.

St. Anthony won the JV game 65-37. Martelli led the JV Bulldogs with 13 points while Adam Levitt added 10 points. Micah Sandiford scored 13 points to lead the JV Hornets.
