Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Newton 41-39 in girls basketball action Thursday evening at the Enlow Center.

The Bulldogs held a 12-7 opening quarter lead behind the six points of senior Megan Nuxoll. Newton came back as Richards scored six and Koebele five in the second period to pull within 22-21 at halftime.

St. Anthony then had a 13-7 third quarter run. Nuxoll tallied six more points as the Bulldogs led 35-28 going into the final quarter. Here came the Eagles. Newton outscored the Bulldogs 11-6 as Richards again scored six but the Eagles fell short.

Nuxoll led St. Anthony with 20 points. Five other players scored in the contest. Richards led five players in scoring for Newton with 22 points. She connected on five field goals and was 11 of 13 at the line.

Newton claimed the junior varsity contest, 49-40.

At Cowden

Altamont came calling and claimed a 57-28 National Trail Conference win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Indians stepped out to a 25-7 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Keidron Duckwitz tallied 18 points while Elizabeth Biggs added 12 for the winners.

CHBC was led by Chandler Ward with 12 points. The Hornets drop to 1-10 overall.

South Central picked up a non-conference victory over Webber Township (Bluford) Thursday evening.

Keely Smith scored 14 and Abby Hahn 11 in the victory. The Cougars led 22-19 going into the final period and had a 16-12 run.

South Central is now 4-6 on the season.

Neoga remains unbeaten in the young National Trail Conference season after downing Brownstown/St. Elmo 67-53.

The Indians took the early 16-7 lead and had a 34-20 halftime lead. EC Thies led the winners with 27 points. Olivia Ott contributed 16. The Indians are now 2-0 in the conference, 11-2 overall.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Pruett wuth 27.
