MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School made a comeback bid only to fall short in a 31-27 non-conference girls basketball loss to Mount Vernon Thursday evening.

The Rams held an 11-3 opening quarter lead and led 24-16 at halftime. Mount Vernon led 24-20 going into the final quarter.

Heinzman tallied 13 to lead the winners. St. Anthony was led by Hunter Niebrugge with eight points and eight rebounds.

Dieterich claimed a National Trail Conference victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo 49-43. The Movin' Maroons trailed BSE 17-15 at halftime then had a 16-13 third period run and outscored the Bombers 18-13 in the final quarter.

Courtney Flach scored 20 for the winners while Mallorie Vahling chipped in with 14. Vahling pulled down 17 rebounds and had three assists. Kelsey Webb had three assists. Flach led in steals with six. Dieterich is now 2-1 in the conference, 7-4 overall.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Morgan Brown with 14 and Elissa Baron with 10.

Teutopolis picked up a 58-41 victory over Pana Thursday evening.

T-town broke an 11-11 opening quarter tie with a 16-8 second period run. The Wooden Shoes then outscored Pana 31-22 in the second half.

Hardiek and Sandschafer provided the one-two scoring punch with 14 points each for the Shoes. Hardiek nailed six two-pointers and connected on both free throws. Sandschafer knocked in six field goals including two trifectas. Thoele pulled down six rebounds while Sandschafer had five.

South Central picked up a 50-29 non-conference victory over Webber Township (Bluford)

The Cougars led 24-19 at halftime and outscored Webber Township 26-7 in the second half. Abby Hahn tallied 22 while Sidney Wilkins chipped in with 12.

"We were sluggish the first half at both ends of the court," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "We came out in the second half and our defense was much more aggressive. That helped our offense start attacking which allowed us to pull away. We have some areas to work on as we continue to improve but the girls worked hard tonight."

The Cougars are now 3-2 on the season.
