The Charleston Lady Trojans improved to 8-0 on the season by defeating the Effingham Lady Hearts 70-48 in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday night. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Charleston led 5-0 out of the gate and were never caught. Effingham trailed 19-13 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime, and 50-35 after three quarters before outscoring the Hearts 20-13 in the final period.

Charleston shot 43% from the field, making 22 of 51 shots. The Trojans also got 34 foul shots, making 22 of those for 65%. The Trojans turned the ball over 15 times but grabbed 36 rebounds and made four of 15 three-point shots.

Effingham made 17 of 45 shots for 38%, hit just nine of 19 free throws, committed 18 turnovers, pulled down 27 rebounds and made five of 10 three-point tries.

Jantzen Michael scored 28 of Effingham's 48 points on 11 of 21 shooting. After missing her first six shots, Michael hit on 11 of her last 15 shots. Marranda Steffen scored eight points, Shelby Nunamaker five, Aly Armstrong four, Shelby Myers two, and Taylor Crowell one point. Crowell also led Effingham with six rebounds, while Bria Barr had five, Michael four, Brittany Beals three, Armstrong, Maddy Field and Nunamaker two each, and Steffen, Sidney Webster and Myers one each.

"We showed some really good stretches of play tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We were within striking distance in the first half, we had a flat two minutes to start the third quarter. After being down 23, we cut it to 12 multiple times.

"Charleston is a very good team, they have a lot of weapons. We kind of caught them off guard pushing the pace, but we didn't make any shots. We did an excellent job of finding Jantzen tonight and she delivered. She still has to be more vocal and help lead. We got that from Shelby Nunamaker. She played well in her second start.

"We got some really good minutes from Bria Barr and Aly Armstrong off the bench. We have to have more intensity for 32 minutes. We had flashes tonight, but we still have to be more consistent."

Effingham is now 3-3 on the season.

Charleston won the JV game 42-38. Shelby Myers had 20 points to lead the JV Hearts.
