Breese Central Over Effingham in Championship Game, Mt. Zion Over St. Anthony for Third Place

The Breese Central Cougars captured the championship of the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament with a 51-44 win over the Effingham Hearts Saturday night at the Enlow Center. The Mt. Zion Braves took third place honors with a 50-31 victory over the St. Anthony Bulldogs. Both contests were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  
 
BREESE CENTRAL 51, EFFINGHAM 44
 
The Hearts were behind 7-0 to start the game and trailed by as many as 13 points before they started a comeback that brought them to within three points, but never closer. Breese Central led 10-5 after one quarter, 25-13 at halftime, and 32-25 after three quarters. The Cougars were aided by red-hot three-point shooting, hitting eight of 12 attempts.
 
The Hearts finished at 38% from the field, hitting 17 of 45 shots. They were perfect at the line, seven-of-seven, committed just eight turnovers and pulled down 26 rebounds. The Hearts hit just three of 14 three-point tries.
 
Breese Central made 15 of 40 shots for 38%, added 13 of 17 from the line, committed just five turnovers and grabbed 23 rebounds.
 
Grant Wolfe led Effingham with 17 points, including all three of the Hearts' made three-pointers. Michael Carie finished with 10 points and led in rebounds with eight. Also for Effingham: Jacob Donaldson eight, Braydon Bone five, Jared Minor two and Sean Zerrusen two. Donaldson had five rebounds, Minor four, Wolfe and Zerrusen three each, Bone two and Reed Schafer one.
 
Logan Kohrmann led Breese Central with 19 points, while Mitchell Rule added 14 points.
 
Effingham finished the tournament with a 3-1 record while Breese Central finished 4-0.
 
MT. ZION 50, ST. ANTHONY 31
 
A 19-6 second quarter was key to the Braves win in this one. The Bulldogs were within 9-6 after one quarter, but the second period left St. Anthony down 28-12 at halftime. It was 36-21 after three quarters. The Bulldogs were down by as many as 21 points.
 
St. Anthony made just 26% of its shots, 10 of 38. 26 turnovers were a huge problem. The Bulldogs made of 10 of 14 foul shots and grabbed 35 rebounds. St. Anthony missed all nine of their three-point tries.
 
Mt. Zion hit 19 of 47 shots for 40%, including eight of 26 three-pointers. The Braves made just four of 10 foul shots, committed 16 turnovers and pulled down 22 rebounds.
 
Derek Rios led St. Anthony with eight points, while Andrew Gardewine added seven points. Also for St. Anthony: Jeff Niebrugge four, Nick Grunloh three, Connor Greene two, James Kabbes two, Zach Gardewine two, Braden Puckett two, and Kyle Bourgeois one.
 
Andrew Gardewine led with seven rebounds, while Greene and Rios each had five, Zach Gardewine, Niebrugge and Puckett with four each, Kabbes and Grunloh with two apiece, and Kyle Hartke and Bourgeois each with one.
 
Jordan Horath led Mt. Zion with 12 points.
 
St. Anthony finishes the tournament with a 2-2 record.
