EHS Picks Up Win at Bob Kerans Tourney, Girls Roundup

NEWTON -- Effingham High School bounced back from its opening loss at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament with a victory Tuesday evening.

The Hearts claimed a 49-31 victory over Altamont. EHS took a 13-5 opening quarter lead as six players scored. Altamont pulled back with a 13-9 second quarter run and trailed 22-18 at halftime. Jantzen Micheal knocked in a three-pointer for the Hearts in the second period and connected on two free throws.

EHS then had a 10-5 third period surge and put the game into the win column with a 17-8 run.

Michael tallied 16 points for the winners. She hit three field goals, including two three-pointers, and was eight of 10 at the line. Maddy Field cihpped in with eight points.

Altamont was led by Biggs with seven points.

In the second game, Newton was a 51-45 winner over Flora. No other information was provided.

The tournament continues tonight as Altamont faces Flora at 5 p.m. followed by Effingham taking on Cumberland at 6:30 and Newton meeting Altamont at 8.

At Cowden

North Clay (Louisville) handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 42-32 loss in opening round play at the CHBC Round Robin Thanksgiving Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals edged out to a 17-16 first half lead then had a 25-16 second half run. Mikayla Stanfield scored 17 points for the winners. CHBC was led by Jensyn Morrison with 20.

In the second contest, Dieterich downed Brownstown/St. Elmo 71-54. The Movin' Maroons were led by three players in double figures. Courtney Flach connected on 11 field goals, including two three-pointers, and three free throws for 27 points. Kallee Rae Heuerman and Mallorie Vahling scored 16 points each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Morgan Brown with 23 points and Kyrstyn Fitch with 12.

In the final contest, Neoga bounced Ramsey 70-40. The Indians didn't let any grass grow under their feet as they leaped out to a 21-8 opening quarter lead. The Indians then had a 30-4 third period run.

Madison Butler scored 25 while EC Thies added 18, Jaycie Roy 14 and Olivia Ott 10.

The tournament will lay off until Friday when six games are on tap starting at 11 a.m.
