NEWTON -- Flora High School edged Effingham 34-33 in opening round play at the Bob Kerans Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The Hearts stepped out to a 13-5 opening quarter lead. Flora came back with an 8-5 run to pull within 18-13 at halftime. Flora then pushed way ahead with a 16-3 third period run and held off a final quarter flurry by the Hearts.

Bayles tallied 16 for the winners. Effingham was led by Jantzen Michael with 11 and Maddy Field with 10.

"This was a tough loss for us," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Flora played their hearts out. We had a basket waved off at the buzzer, just needed a half a second. We just struggled as a team. We had some nice individual efforts but we have to make better decisions down the stretch.

"We got some great minutes from Shelby Nunamaker and Aly Armstrong. We just have to clean up some things and keep working together better. We wasted half of our possessions in the second and third quarters and that is not acceptable. We made a great run after being down eight starting the fourth quarter."

In the second contest, Newton trounced Cumberland 63-23. The Eagles ran off to a 39-12 halftime lead and had a 22-3 third period surge.

Richards scored 20 for the winners while Davidson added 11 and Kerner 10.

Cumberland was led by Guyon with eight points.
