Bulldogs Nab Two Wins, T-town Splits in Girls Tourneys

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School picked up two victories during Saturday action at the Taylorville Tornadoes Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Bulldogs defeated Mount Zion 36-32. St. Anthony stepped out to a 21-12 first half lead on the  Braves. Megan Nuxoll tallied six points in the opening quarter and had eight by halftime.

The 5-foot-9 senior came back and connected on eight of eight free throws in the third and fourth quarters to end with 16 points. The senior finished with 12 of 12 from the free throw line.

In the second game, the Bulldogs won over Decatur Eisenhower 60-39. St. Anthony pushed out to a 34-16 halftime lead and never looked back.

Nuxoll finished with 23 points in this one, hitting seven two-pointers and nine of nine at the free throw line. Also in double figures was Abbie Schmidt with 11 points.

"Both games are great wins for us against 3A teams," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman.

In other games Saturday, Hillsboro beat Eisenhower 53-39, Lincoln won over Jacksonville 57-50, Taylorville downed Auburn 52-21, Aubrn edged Jacksonville 54-48, Hillsboro defeated Mount Zion 43-38 and Taylorville downed Lincoln 45-39.

The tournament continues this Friday with  Auburn taking on Decatur Eisenhower at 3:30 p.m. followed by Jacksonville against Mount Zion at 5, St. Anthony taking on Lincoln at 6:30 and Taylorville facing Hillsboro at 8. The tournament will conclude Saturday.

At Salem

Pool play came to a close in the 14th Annual Salem Wildcat Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.

Teutopolis split victories. The Wooden Shoes defeated Carlyle 71-32 in the opening game. T-town stepped out to an 18-7 opening quarter lead and had a 28-4 third period run.

The Shoes had three players hit double digits. Chelsey Hardiek scored 16 while Michelle Schmidt added 15 and Hannah Bueker 11. Schmidt led the team in rebounds with eight. Danielle Repking added six boards. Hardiek finished with five steals.

In the second game, Highland claimed a 54-45 win over the Shoes. Highland moved ahead 10-8 in the opening quarter and 26-18 at halftime. The Bulldogs then had a 28-27 second half edge.

Hannah Bueker led T-town with 23 points. Bueker connected on two-point field goals and seven three-pointers. Schmidt chipped in with nine. Bueker led in rebounds with three and steals with four.

At Dieterich

Dieterich bounced Cumberland to the tune of 79-28 in non-conference action Saturday.

The Movin' Maroons pulled ahead 39-23 at halftime then had a 40-5 second half run. Courtney Flach tallied a whopping 40 points in the contest. Flach hit nine two-pointers, four three-pointers and was 10 of 10 at the free throw line. Flach also led in steals with 10.

Mallorie Vahling scored 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Vahling hit nine two-pointers and three free throws. Kallee Heuerman had 11 boards.

Cumberland was led by Dannie Lochbaum with eight points.

Dieterich improves to 1-2 on the season.

Dieterich was a 28-22 winner in junior varsity action.
