Bulldogs, Hearts Pick Up Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham St. Anthony High School played host to Dieterich in girls high school basketball play Tuesday evening and claimed a 42-38 win.

The Bulldogs held a 7-4 opening quarter lead as Megan Nuxoll tallied five points. Dieterich came roaring back with a 17-11 second period run to lead 21-18 at halftime.

In that run, Courtney Flach scored 11 of her total 15 points. She connected on four field goals, including a three-pointer, and hit two free throws.

The Bulldogs started their comeback with a 10-7 run in the third quarter to tie the score at 28-28. Abbie Schmidt hit six points. St. Anthony then had a 14-10 final period run to claim the four-point victory.

Nuxoll finished with 15 points including six in the final quarter run for St. Anthony. Mallorie Vahling scored 16 and Flach 15 for the Maroons.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest 32-26.

At Effingham

Effingham broke a 17-17 halftime tie and went on for a 38-29 non-conference victory over Pana Tuesday evening.

The Hearts stepped out to an 11-5 opening quarter lead but Pana came back to knot the score at halftime with a 12-6 run. The Hearts pushed ahead 25-23 going into the final quarter then had a 13-6 run.

Jantzen Michael tallied 20 points for the winners, connecting on five field goals and nine of 10 free throws. Taylor Crowell, Brittany Beals and Maddy Field had five rebounds each.

The game was the season opener for the Hearts.

At Newton

Teutopolis bounced back from an opening season loss to down Newton 54-39 Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes broke a 10-10 opening quarter tie with a 16-9 second period run. The Shoes led 33-29 going into the final period then put the game away from the free throw line with a 21-10 run. The Shoes connected on 11 free throws.

Leading T-town were Repking with 16 points and Hardiek with 11. Hardiek led in rebounding with six while Bueker and Schmidt pulled down five each. Gebben chipped in with nine points.

Newton was led by Richards with eight and Koebele with seven.

Mount Olive came calling and handed Brownstown/St. Elmo a 62-46 loss in a non-conference contest.

Mount Olive jumped out to a 17-3 opening quarter lead and led 29-13 at halftime. Brownstown/St. Elmo came back with a 34-33 second half run but fell short.

Brown led Brownstown/St. Elmo with 13 points. Eleven players scored in the contest.

Vandalia took a 17-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 43-20 non-conference win over Altamont Tuesday evening.

The Vandals led 31-11 at halftime. No Vandalia player scored in double figures but eight scored in the game.

Altamont was led by Biggs with six points and Burns with five.

Charleston ran off a 30-0 first quarter lead and went on to down Cumberland 73-22 in non-conference play Tuesday evening.

Three Trojan players finished in double figures. Morgan Sherwood tallied 21 while Dakota Crowder added 13 and Paige Swango 11.

Cumberland was led by Meghan Willenborg with 16 points, 13 in the second half.
