Effingham Sacred and Cumberland split junior high school girls basketball victories Thursday evening.

Cumberland was a 23-16 winner in seventh-grade action. Cumberland held a 12-6 halftime lead then pushed that to 20-8 going into the final quarter.

Hendrix tallied 10 for the winners. C. Feldhake led the Shamrocks with 14.

In eighth-grade action, Sacred Heart captured a 35-28 win. The Shamrocks held a 10 point lead going into the final quarter. N. Carie tallied 15 for the winners. A. Ruholl led Cumberland with 12.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony captured the eighth-grade win but fell in seventh-grade play to Olney Thursday evening.

In the seventh-grade game, Olney went overtime to edge the Bullpups 22-18. The score was knotted at 8-8 at halftime and 12-12 going into the final quarter. Both teams scored six points to send the contest into overtime where Olney won with a 4-0 surge.

Katherine Slaughter led the Bullpups with eight points as the team dropped to 12-6.

In the eighth-grade contest, St. Anthony was a 40-22 winner. St. Anthony held an 18-11 halftime lead then had a 22-12 second half run.

Katie Kabbes and Meg Richards scored 10 points each for the winners who improve to 15-3.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo handed Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick two National Trail Conference losses Thursday evening.

B/SE claimed the seventh-grade game 24-22. B/SE took a 10-5 opening quarter lead and led 14-11 at halftime. BCCH came back with an 11-10 second half lead but fell short.

B/SE was led by C. Wilhour and Oberlink with eight points each. BCCH was led by Lauren Wojcik with eight points as the squad fell to 3-3 in the conference, 10-6 overall.

In the eighth-grade game, Brownstown/St. Elmo captured a 29-23 win. B/SE held a 19-12 first half lead. C. Wilhour tallied 11 and Oberlink 10 for the winners.

BCCH was led by Cecilia Miller with 10 points. The squad drops to 2-4 in the NTC, 9-9 overall.

At Newton

Altamont came calling and handed Jasper County two defeats Thursday evening.

Altamont won the seventh-grade game 27-25. Jasper County took an 11-2 opening quarter lead but Altamont came back to pull within 15-13 at halftime. Altamont then had a 14-10 second half run to capture the win.

In the eighth-grade contest, Altamont led 18-8 at halftime then had a 26-9 second half run for a 44-17 win.

Mayhaus tallied 12 points for the winners. Alison Russell led Jasper County with eight.
