SIUE Men's Basketball Team Wins Exhibition

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Three Cougars scored in double figures Thursday night as SIUE men's basketball opened the season with a 90-52 exhibition win over Greenville at the Vadalabene Center.

After falling behind 6-2 in the game's first three minutes, SIUE reeled off the next 17 points to lead 19-6 on a Grant Fiorentinos layup with 10:39 to play before halftime.

"There's always going to be jitters," SIUE Head Coach Lennox Forrester said. "There were some nerves, but I thought our guys got us off to a good start."

The Cougars led 39-16 at the break.

The Panthers scored the six of the first eight points to open the second half and trailed 41-22 after a jumper by Brian Ehresman at 17:33.

Elmo Smith scored a tip-in basket for Greenville with 11:24 to play to make it 54-31 SIUE when the Cougars pulled away again. Maurice Wiltz hit a pair of threes, and freshman Keenan Simmons added a three for the Cougars to make it 63-33 with 10:30 left.

For the game, the Cougars shot 56.7 percent (34-60) from the field.
