Champaign St. Thomas More showed why they are the top-rated 2A girls basketball team in the state Friday night.  The Sabres posted a 63-43 win over the Teutopolis Lady Shoes in state tournament semifinal action in Redbird Arena at Illinois State University.  The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

St. Thomas More led 16-5 after the first quarter.  The Lady Shoes played the Sabres pretty much even in the second period, but still trailed 28-18 at halftime, having been down by as much as 14 points.

Teutopolis came out with all guns blazing in the third quarter, forcing St. Thomas More into turnovers that the Shoes capitalized on.  Teutopolis closed to within 33-30 and had the ball, but two consecutive turnovers that led to St. Thomas More scores shifted the momentum back to the Sabres and St. Thomas More had a 38-30 lead after three quarters.

Not much went right for the Lady Shoes in the fourth period, where St. Thomas More posted a 25-13 edge to win by 20 points.

Teutopolis shot 34% from the field, making 15 of 44 shots.  The Shoes made 10 of 12 foul shots, but turned the ball over 19 times.  Teutopolis grabbed 19 rebounds and made three of 10 three-point shots.

St. Thomas More hit 50% of its shots, 23 of 46 and made 12 of 19 from the line.  The Sabres turned the ball over 15 times, pulled down 29 rebounds, and made five of 14 three-point shots.

Chelsey Hardiek came off the bench to lead Teutopolis in scoring with 11 points.  Cierra Thompson scored 10 points, Danielle Repking eight, Jessica Schumacher six, Cassidy Lohman three, Haley Giles and Madeline Hartke two points each, and Anna Hartke one point.  Madeline Hartke, Teutopolis' leading scorer, was held to just four shots in the game against the much taller St. Thomas More team.

St. Thomas More, now 32-2, will play in the state championship game for the second consecutive season tonight at 8:15pm against Prophetstown.  The Prophets defeated Elmhurst IC Catholic 57-48 in the other semifinal game Friday night.  Teutopolis, now 28-6, will play for third place at 6:30pm against Elmhurst IC Catholic, a game that will be broadcast on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

A reminder that Sunday's Welcome Home and Parade for the Lady Shoes has been cancelled due to the impending winter storm.  A ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.
