Coach Laurie Thompson and her Teutopolis Wooden Shoes aren't really that surprised they're headed to state. The goal at the very beginning of the year was to get to state and win the title. Two more games and they'll have attained that goal.
"Our goal at the very beginning was to get to state and win the championship," said Thompson. "We're enjoying the experience but at the same time we're here for a reason and we have to keep that focus. I really think we can do it. These girls believe they can and they have to believe it if we're going to beat a very nice team in Champaign St. Thomas More. I'm saying a state championship. These girls have worked hard for it.
The Wooden Shoes are back at the Class 2A state tournament after a six-year layoff. This will be the second time Thompson has taken a team to state as the 2008 squad finished third with a 31-5 record. This team enters the fray against St. Thomas More Friday with a 28-5 record. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Redbird Arena in Bloomington. The second game features Prophetstown against Elmhurst IC Catholic at 8:15 p.m. The winners advance to the state championship Saturday at 8:15 p.m. while the losers square off for third place at 6:30.
Coach Thompson talked about her starters.
"Jessica Schumacher, a senior, has probably one of the best shooting forms on the team. She has been shooting really well lately. She's a good rebounder and can drive. She doesn't stand out a lot but you miss her when she's not there. She just makes things flow for us.
"Madeline Hartke, a senior, is our go-to player. She's very versatile as far as playing inside and out. Just a hard-nosed defensive and offensive player. She's been very offense-minded lately and has been very aggressive. She's a team leader.
"Haley Giles, a senior center. She's a long-armed kid. She'll be playing against the post inside. Probably will be a little outmatched this game but she will have to use her quickness. She has a nice 15-foot jump shot.
"Cierra Thompson, a senior, shares point guard duties with Danielle Repking. She is mainly our outside scoring threat. Probably defensive-wise she's quick in the open court. Pretty good basketball logic. She leads us.
"Danielle Repking, a sophomore, point guard/off guard. I like to put her defensively on the best guard on the other team. The defensive part is her focus but she can score and has a nice jump shot. These last few games, she's been concentrating on the defensive part and she makes good decisions on the court.
"Off the bench, Anna Hartke, a sophomore, will be coming into play post a lot of times. Not as big as Haley but she'll go to the basket. She played very beneficial the last game especially. She's a very good rebounder.
"Chelsea Hardiek, a junior, comes in at three-guard or I put her inside. She's versatile. She's one of our stronger players. Nice job rebounding and going up strong. Probably best success is her drive and taking that jump shot.
"Hannah Bueker, a junior guard, will get into the rotation as well. Nice defensive player and outside threat."
The Shoes beat a nice Breese Central team to claim the Salem Super-Sectional. They've won seven straight after suffering a regular season loss to Breese Mater Dei back on February 3.
"For us right now we're playing with confidence," said Thompson. "Confidence offensively is huge. We're playing our typical defense. We're going to have to step up the intensity for that next game. You're at state, it's time to step up. we're going to have to step it up even more. We need to take care of the ball and make good decisions."
St. Thomas More comes into the meeting Friday with a 31-2 mark. The two losses came against Kankakee McNamara 84-70 and Chicago Whitney Young 73-43. They have won 21 straight since their last defense December 14.
"St. Thomas More is a nice overall team," said Thompson. "They have nice post players, two of them. We're going to have to keep them in check. Alexa Wallen and Tori McCoy. Both take it to the basket. We're going to have to keep them from scoring. They also have a nice player, point guard, Randa Harshbarger who goes outside. These are kids that can play ball.
"We're going to have to come out with a tremendous defensive effort. In the past we thought we could lay off a kid but in this situation everyone has to be guarded. More important they are a quick team and they like to run. We have to slow down their transition and make sure we get back. We just need to play with confidence and aggressive like we have been.
"We're going to have to make good decisions. Every position we need to execute tomorrow night. No silly shots. We have to play a very smart game and physical and well. We're going to have to come and play all-around, it's as simple as that."
Thompson has been to state as a player and as an assistant coach under Dennis Koester. Now she's been to state twice. This will be the first time for daughter Cierra.
"I want these girls and my daughter to make some memories of their own," said Thompson. "Just like I did."
The Teutopolis team were to be honored at a Welcome Home Parade and Reception Sunday, March 2 but the reception and band concert have been postponed to a later date
