St. A, Altamont To Meet for Regional Title, Area Roundup

NOKOMIS -- Effingham St. Anthony and Altamont will square off once again and this time it will be for the Class 1A Nokomis Boys Basketball Regional championship.
Altamont opened Wednesday evening with a 73-49 win over Beecher City. The Indians jumped out to a 21-11 opening quarter lead and led 35-21 at halftime. The Indians then had a 23-15 third period run.
Garrett Ziegler tallied 26 points for the winners while Seidel chipped in with 13. Beecher City was led by Barnes with 16.
In the second contest, St. Anthony defeated host Nokomis 48-35. The Bulldogs held a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 25-16 at halftime and 30-23 going into the final quarter.
Neil Williams tallied 24 to lead the Bulldogs while John Goeckner chipped in with 10.
St. Anthony and Altamont will square off for the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 1A Cumberland Regional
Dieterich and Neoga will meet for the Cumberland Regional championship after both picked up victories Wednesday evening.
Neoga claimed a 53-48 win over Palesitne/Hutsonville. The Indians trailed Palestine/Hutsonville 13-12 after the opening quarter. Neoga then came back with a 15-7 second period run to lead 27-20 at halftime. Neoga then had a 16-13 third period lead before Palestine/Hutsonville came back 15-10 in the final period but fell short.
J. Baker led the Indians with 18 points while A. Baker chipped in with 10.
In the opening game, Dieterich bounced Stewardson-Strasburg 76-37. The Movin' Maroons took control early with a 22-11 opening quarter lead and led 42-20 at halftime.
Bohnhoff led Dieterich with 22 points while Feldhake chipped in with 12, Aherin added 12 and Traub 11.
Stew-Stras was led by Helmuth and Kessler with eight points each.

Class 2A Robinson Regional
Teutopolis will be playing for the championship of the Robinson Regional after beating Newton 58-44.
The Wooden Shoes leaped out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead on the Eagles as six players scored. Then it was Newton's turn as the Eagles took an 8-4 second period lead to pull within 21-14 at halftime.
T-town got back on track with a 19-10 third period surge as Reed Hardiek knocked down two three-pointers and Bobby Wenthe hit a regular basket and a three-pointer. Brett Mette added four free throws.
Newton came back in the final quarter with a 20-18 run only to fall short.
T-town had four players in double figures in even scoring. Cody Will and Mette tallied 12 each while Wenthe and Hardiek scored 11 each.
Newton was led by Luke Stone with 24 points.
In the opening contest, Casey-Westfield defeated Marshall 55-42.
T-town will take on Casey-Westfield at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

Oblong claimed a 45-33 win over North Clay (Louisville) in the first game of the evening while Cisne beat Clay City 59-48 in the second contest.
North Clay and Oblong were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter before North Clay took a 19-16 halftime lead and led 30-24 going into the final quarter.
Oblong mounted a big comeback with a 21-3 final period surge to pull out the victory. Oblong was led by Mayhew with 14 and Mehler with 13.
North Clay was led by Britton with 14 and Cox with 11.
Oblong squares off against Cisne at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional title.
