Problems at the end cost the Effingham Hearts Tuesday night as they fell to the Mt. Vernon Rams 49-38 in a contest at Mt. Vernon.

It was close throughout.  The game was tied 12-12 after one quarter, Mt. Vernon led 27-25 at halftime and the Rams were up 34-31 after three quarters.  It was still anybody's ballgame until some late fourth quarter turnovers cost the Hearts a shot at the victory.

Leighton Lark scored 11 points, all in the second half, to lead Effingham.  Matt Wohltman scored eight points, and Kevin Daugherty scored seven points, all in the first half.  Kennan Mahaffey and Marcus Robinson each hit two three-pointers in the first half to account for their six points apiece.

The Hearts scored just 13 points in the second half, with Lark accounting for 11 of those.

Jake Pike had 14 points, Shakari Hawkins 13 and Braden Fitzgerralls 11 points to lead Mt. Vernon.

Effingham slipped to 19-5 with the loss.  The Hearts close out the regular season Friday night at Mahomet-Seymour.

Effingham won the JV game 66-53.  Grant Wolfe scored 31 points to lead the JV Hearts.  Michael Carie added 18 points.  Also for Effingham: Drew Vasquez and Brent Beals four points each, Michael Woltman three, and Reed Schafer, Jacob Donaldson and Jared Minor two points each.
