The St. Anthony Bulldogs took the first step down the post-season trail Tuesday night, defeating the Cowden-Herrick Hornets 60-52 in action at the Nokomis Class 1A Regional Tournament.  The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

The Bulldogs are the #2 seed and the Hornets the #7 seed, but apparently Cowden-Herrick never got the memo.  The young and small Hornets hung tough until the end against the deeper and more experienced Bulldogs.

Both teams shot the ball well early, with the Bulldogs holding a 16-12 lead after one quarter.  St. Anthony pulled away in the second period and led 29-20 at halftime.  The Bulldogs had as big as a 14-point lead before Cowden-Herrick started a comeback that saw them pull as close as five points several times and four points once before St. Anthony righted the ship to post the eight-point win.

It was 43-37 Bulldogs after three quarters and St. Anthony outscored Cowden-Herrick 17-15 in the final period.

Each team had two big guns in the contest.  John Goeckner with 20 and Neil Williams with 19 points paced the Bulldogs attack, while Colton Burrus with 19 points and Dylan Barnes with 16 points led the Hornets.

Also for St. Anthony...Alex Hoelscher eight, Frank Jansen six, Andrew Gardewine five, and Matt Gibson two points.

Also for Cowden-Herrick...Noah Sandiford six, Carson Lorton five, Micah Sandiford four, and Konner Blackerby two points.

St. Anthony hit 25 of 49 shots for 51%.  The Bulldogs made eight of 11 foul shots, committed 11 turnovers, grabbed 29 rebounds and made two of six three-point shots.

Cowden-Herrick was 17 of 41 from the field for 41%, made 13 of 16 foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times, pulled down 18 rebounds, and hit on five of 12 threes.

St. Anthony improved to 19-10 with the win and will take on Nokomis Wednesday at 8pm.  Nokomis defeated Ramsey 73-45 in the other contest.  Altamont will play Beecher City in the opener at 6pm.  We'll have both games from Nokomis Wednesday on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Cowden-Herrick closes its season with a 6-21 record, but loses just one senior, Colton Evans, to graduation.
