Cardinals Non-Tender Axford
(St. Louis, MO) -- Cardinals pitcher John Axford is now a free agent. St. Louis elected not to tender the veteran reliever a contract for 2014 before last night's deadline for unsigned players. The Cardinals did tender contracts to outfielders Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos and infielder Daniel Descalso.
Former Cub Navarro Signs In Toronto
(Toronto, Ontario) -- Former Cubs catcher Dioner Navarro is moving on. The 29-year-old agreed to a two-year, eight-million-dollar contract with the Toronto Blue Jays Monday. Navarro hit a career-high 13 homers and hit .300 for Chicago this past season.
Cubs Tender Contracts To Seven
(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs tendered contracts to seven players prior to last night's deadline. Among those non-tendered were Daniel Bard, Mat Gamel and Chang-Yong Lim. Travis Wood, Luis Valbuena, Pedro Strop, Nate Schierholtz, Jeff Samardzija, James Russell and Darwin Barney were all offered contracts. Donnie Murphy and George Kottaras each came to terms on deals to avoid arbitration.
White Sox Sign Flowers, Avoid Arbitration
(Chicago, IL) -- The White Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with catcher Tyler Flowers. The contract is worth $950,000. The deal helps both sides avoid arbitration. Flowers hit .195 with ten homers and 24 RBI in 84 games last season for the Pale Hose.
The White Sox tendered contracts to all but one of their candidates prior to last night's deadline. Pitcher Dylan Axelrod was non-tendered and is now a free agent. Gordon Beckham, Alejandro de Aza and Dayan Viciedo were all tendered deals, while Tyler Flowers was signed to a new deal.
