Altamont Edges St. A, South Central Winner

ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School tallied all five of its runs in the third inning to edge Effingham St. Anthony 5-4 in National Trail Conference baseball action Wednesday.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Eli Dasenbrock led off with a single. Alex Hoelscher singled with one out. With two outs, Zach Gardewine drew a walk followed by Brandon Puckett drawing a walk to score Dasenbrock.

But the Indians came back in the third. Borders, Cornett and Ziegler drew three straight walks to load the bases. Goeckner drew a walk to score Borders while Wolff drew a fifth straight walk to push Cornett across the plate. Miller followed with a single, scoring a run and Armstrong's ground out scored a run. Winn had a single to score the final run and Altamont held a 5-1 lead.

St. Anthony rallied with three runs in the fifth to pull within 5-4. Jacob Lorenz led off the frame with a single followed by Neil Williams garnering a single. Austin Bushur doubled home a run and Dasenbrock grounded out, scoring a run. Wolff buckled down and got the next two batters to end the rally.

St. Anthony got a baserunner on in the seventh as Williams got his second single but the Bulldogs couldn't get the run across.

At Patoka

South Central handed Patoka a 4-2 loss in action Tuesday. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second and led 2-1 after three. South Central then tallied two more in the fifth.

Tyler Ross picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with four walks and three strikeouts. He came on in relief of Dylan Peters who went three innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out seven.

Tyler Ross had two singles and two RBI while Noah Powless and Kyle Bray had a single and double each.

South Central is back in action hosting Brownstown/St. Elmo at 4:30 p.m. in the National Trail Conference Tournament Monday.
