Effingham High School handed Marion an 8-4 loss in baseball competition Friday.

Marion got on the board in the first inning after Chase Niemeyer doubled, scoring a run.

But the Hearts came back to move ahead in the bottom of the first after Andrew Wagoner tripled down the right field line and Brody Boehm lined out, each scoring one run.

EHS extended its lead to 5-1 in the second as a ground out by Wagoner and a single by Colton Webb added on three more runs.

Nick Martin drew a walk in the third and came home for the sixth run and Webber hit a solo shot in the fourth and the Hearts led 7-1.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth and Marion added on a final run in the sixth.

Jude Traub earned the win for the Hearts. The hurler allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned over 4 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking three. Brayden Tucker and Rylan Pals then each threw shutout innings in relief.

EHS had 10 hits in the contest led by Webb with a single, home run and three RBI, Traub with two doubles, Boehm and Braddy with two singles each and Wagoner with a triple and two RBI.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham had one lone hit, a single by J. Warner. The Hearts fell 8-2.

At Cowden

Newton picked up a 14-6 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City behind a 16-hit attack Friday.

The Eagles stepped out to a 3-1 opening inning lead but CHBC tied in the bottom of the second. Newton then tallied a run in the third and never looked back, scoring six in the fourth and finishing with four in the seventh.

The Eagles had 11 hits led by Quincy Fulton with a single, solo home run and one RBI, Drake Wolf with two singles, a double and an RBI, Gavin Meinhart and Kohlten Barthelme with two singles, a double and three RBI each, David Ferguson with a double, Dexter Fulton with a single and three RBI and Nolen Cleaver with a single and two RBI.

The Bobcats were led by Wyatt Rueff with two doubles and an RBI and Conner Nowitzke, Ben Askins and Kyle Lamb with two singles each. Blake Mueller added a single and two RBI.

N. Cleaver was the winning pitcher, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, one walk while striking out six.

Teutopolis fell to Columbia in the Metro Classic Friday, 6-3.

The Wooden Shoes held a 1-0 lead in the first. Columbia tied in the second then moved into a 4-1 lead in the third and finished with single runs in the fourth and seventh.

T-town had eight hits led by Henry Thompson with two doubles, Davin Worman with a double and Michael Niebrugge with a single and two RBI.

Borries suffered the loss, going four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, two walks and striking out four.

Saturday's Games

At O'Fallon

Effingham St. Anthony competed in the Mero East Kickoff Saturday claiming two victories.

The Bulldogs won over Harrisburg 1-0, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off double by Henry Brent.

Brock Fearday, Aiden Lauritzen and Samuel Link all had a single each.

Joseph Tegeler picked up the pitching win, coming on the final two innings, allowing one hit, one walk and stirking out two.

In the second contest, St. Anthony blanked Marissa-Coulterville, 10-0 in five innings.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 4-0 lead then tacked on three runs in the second and three in the third to end the contest via the 10-run rule.

Brent had a triple while Alex Mayer had a double and an RBI and Lauritzen and Brady Hatton a single and two RBI each. Xander Beals added an RBI.

Beals was the winning pitcher. He went three innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out three.

Brownstown/St. Elmo broke a 1-1 tie after two innings with a five-run third and went on for an 8-5 victory over Hillsboro Saturday.

Both teams had seven hits. Dodge Willms had a double and drove in two runs for the winners while Nolan Wilhour had three singles and an RBI and Corey Hoopingarner two singles and four RBI.

Willms picked up the win on the mound, going four innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk while striking out three. Hoopingarner came on for the save, going two innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out one.

BSE is now 1-1 on the season and is back in action Tuesday at North Clay.

At Carlyle

Altamont broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fourth and went on for an 11-3 victory over Carlyle Saturday.

Behind a 13-hit attack, Altamont finished with seven RBI and was aided by eight Carlyle errors.

Altamont led 4-3 in the fourth then scored over the next three innings.

Kade Milleville led the hitting attack with a single, two doubles and an RBI. Brayden Elam added a single, triple and an RBI, Zaine Miller a single, double and an RBI, Brayden Schnarre a double and an RBI, Will Reardon a double, Keegan Schultz two singles and an RBI and Carson Millevile a single and two RBI.

Schultz went the first six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, four walks and striking out eight for the win.

Neoga easily handled Central A&M to the tune of 17-1 in four innings Saturday.

The Indians ran out to a 7-0 opening inning lead, had four run innings in the second and fourth sandwiched around two runs in the third.

Carter Young and Garrett Ballinger led the way in the hitting department. Young had two doubles and three RBI while Ballinger had a double, homerun and six RBI. Cayden Hakman finished with two singles and an RBI and Landon Titus had a single and drove in two runs.

Titus went the distance, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out six.

At Moweaqua
