Despite taking a 5-0 lead behind Aaron Judge's two-run homer and Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s shot and holding it through the first four innings, New York gave up five runs to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth to tie the game, all unearned.
Three defensive misplays were behind the Dodgers five unearned runs. Aaron Judge couldn't catch a routine fly ball and that was the first time this season he's had an error. Then Anthony Volpe didn't make an accurate throw to third base. And, finally, Gerrit Cole didn't cover first base on what could have been an inning-ending ground out.
But the Yankees moved ahead in the sixth 6-5 and held that until the eighth.
In the eighth, the Dodgers loaded the bases with no outs and a sacrifice fly by Gavin Lux brought in the tying run. Then a second sacrifice fly, this one by Mookie Betts, pushed the Dodgers ahead and that's where the scoring ended.
L.A.'s Freddie Freeman was named the World Series Most Valuable Player.
The Dodgers will be welcomed back to California with a parade in downtown Los Angeles Friday.
