Altamont, Teutopolis Advance in Junior Legion District

Altamont edged Effingham Post 120 7-6 in the opening game of the District 23 Junior Legion Baseball Tournament at Evergreen Hollow Park Thursday evening.

Effingham Post 120 literally jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead but Altamont didn't waste any time getting back in the contest with a four-run second and eventually held on for the one-run victory in eight innings.

Both teams had nine hits in the game. Altamont's Goeckner led the way with four singles and four RBI while N. Miller had two singles. Armstrong had a single and drove in two runs.

Effingham was led by Bohnhoff, Woltman and Sanders with two singles each. Woltman had two RBI while Bohnhoff had one.

Armstrong picked up the pitching win with three walks and five strikeouts.

In the second contest, Teutopolis edged Newton 6-5 behind a 13-hit attack. Newton held a 3-0 first inning lead but T-town tallied two in the second and tied the score in the third. T-town then took a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Newton came back with two in the sixth but fell short.

Smith led T-town with a single and double while Roepke and Runde had two singles and an RBI each and Johnson two singles. Westendorf chipped in with a double and an RBI and Roewe had a triple.

Newton was led by Zuber and Houchin with two singles each. Houchin drove in three runs. Lidy had a double.

The tournament continues tonight with Teutopolis taking on No. 2 seeded Vandalia at 5 p.m. followed by Altamont facing top-seeded South Central at 7:30. Effingham and Newton drop into loser bracket action where they will play Saturday.
