Effingham Junior HIgh School finished with eight hits Thursday in baseball action and claimed a 7-1 victory over Teutopolis.

The Mustangs edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead and led 2-1 after two. They tacked on a single run in the third and finished with four in the seventh.

Effingham had eight hits led by Calvin Beck, Braden Jones and Kaden Rohr with a double each for Effingham. Brody Nelson added two singles and two RBI while Hunter Harminson had two singles.

D. Thompson picked up the pitching win, going three innings, allowing one run on two hits, no walks and striking out seven. Beck came on to throw the final four innings, allowing no runs on one hit, three walks and striking out eight.

Teutopolis was led by Oakley Bonner with a single and an RBI.

At Cowden

Effingham St. Anthony blanked Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City by a 9-0 count Thursday.

The Bullpups stepped out to a 3-0 opening inning lead and never looked back.

Blake Verdeyen had a double and an RBI for the winners while Anthony Brummer and Charlie Bierman had a single and an RBI each. Charlie Hoene finished with two RBI while James Trupiano and Ben McDonald had an RBI each.

The Bobcats were led by Matt Kircher and Charlie Hardimon with a single each.

Verdeyen was the winning pitcher for the Bullpups. He went five innings, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out 11 and walking only two.

"St. Anthony is a very good baseball team," said CHBC Coach John Brown. "We were really proud of our team and the way they played. St. Anthony will be a state contender this year."
