St. Elmo/Brownstown, St. Anthony Claim Baseball Wins

BROWNSTOWN -- Brownstown/St. Elmo trailed Mulberry Grove twice in high school baseball action Wednesday but came out a 7-5 winner.

The Aces moved into a 2-0 opening inning lead but BSE tied the score in the second then took a 3-2 lead in the third. Mulberry Grove regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. But here came the Bombers with four runs for the victory.

Both teams had six hits. Six players contributed for Brownstown/St. Elmo with a hit each. Calin Chandler, Corey Hoopingarner, Dodge Willms, Lucas Powell, Lane Stine and Gavin Sanders all had a single each. Chandler added two RBI while Hoopingarner, Willms and Powell had one RBI each.

Hoopingarner picked up the pitching win. He went five inings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out six and gave up three walks.

Coach Ryan Beccue's squad improved to 1-1 in the Egyptian-Illini Conference and 3-4 overall.

The Bombers return to action Friday at Effingham St. Anthony.

At Odin

Effingham St. Anthony ended this contest in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule with a 16-4 victory over Odin Wednesday.

Four Bulldog pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter. Will Fearday, Quinton Stephens and Freddy Jansen did not give up a hit. Will Bierman allowed the one hit but had two strikeouts. W. Fearday had three strikeouts and picked up the victory.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had 11 hits and Odin committed six errors while three of their pitchers walked nine.

W. Bierman had a double and drove in three runs while Tim Seiler had two singles and three RBI, Alex Mayer two singles and Vincent Vogel three RBI. Stephens added a single and two RBI, Henry Brent a single and an RBI and Vogel had three RBI.
