Bulldogs Hand Wooden Shoes 5-2 Baseball Loss

Effingham St. Anthony struck early, then held off Teutopolis in a 5-2 high school baseball victory Wednesday.

Brady Hatton got his only hit of the contest and it was a big one.

Aiden Lauritzen led off for the Bulldogs with a single. Will Fearday followed by drawing a walk. T-town's Carter Hoene got Brock Fearday on a strikeout. Then it was Hatton's turn, knocking out a home run and suddenly the Bulldogs held a 3-0 lead. Hoene got out of any more trouble getting the next two batters on ground outs.

The Wooden Shoes' Davin Worman had drawn a walk in the first inning with one out. Then Mick Niebrugge reached base on an error. But two fly balls were caught and the inning ended.

Coach Justin Fleener's squad rumbled again in the second as Henry Thompson was hit by a pitch and Jake Bushur singled. But a strikeout by pitcher Lauritzen and a fly ball ended the frame.

St. Anthony struck again in the second. Rogan Allen and Joseph Tegeler drew back-to-back walks. With one out, Lauritzen singled and W. Fearday followed by reaching base on a fielder's choice as Lauritzen was thrown out. Allan scored to give Fearday an RBI. Tegeler scored on an error.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the third but T-town got out of the frame as Andrew Probst got the final out on a strikeout.

Lauritzen led off with his third hit of the day in the fourth as he tripled with one out. But he was left stranded.

St. Anthony put runners on again in the fifth but couldn't get them home.

T-town went up and down in the third in order before putting Austin Borries and Hoene on with singles to start the fourth but couldn't bring them any farther.

The Shoes finally broke free with two runs in the fifth. With one out, Devin Worman singled and Mick Niebrugge followed with a double. With two outs, Austin Borries singled home both runners. Lauritzen had two strikeouts and the Bulldogs got out of the inning on a grounder.

T-town put runners on in the sixth but failed to advance them. Then in the seventh, T-town made things exciting. With two outs, Borries singled and Hoene followed with a single. T-town loaded the bases as Thompson drew a walk. But relief pitcher Brock Fearday got the final out on a fly ball to third.

The Bulldogs finished with six hits, three less than T-town. But St. Anthony improved to a perfect 5-0 with the win. Lauritzen went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, one walk and striking out five. B. Fearday threw the final inning allowing two hits, giving up one walk and striking out one.

T-town had nine hits led by Michael Niebrugge with a single and double, Borries with two singles and two RBI and Hoene with two singles.

Lauritzen went six innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, one walk and striking out five for the win.

At Kinmundy

South Central ended this game against Webber Township (Bluford) by the 10-run rule, 11-1 Wednesday.

Webber Township held the early lead scoring a run in the second. But that didn't last long as the Cougars came back with a four-run third.

South Central then broke loose with three runs in the fourth and ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cougars had 11 hits. Trevan Sidwell had a single, double and one RBI while Colton Smith had a single, double and an RBI. Colton Smith had a two singles and an RBI, Callaway Smith a double and three RBI, Maddox Robb a double and two RBI and Garrett Shumate a double and an RBI. 

Chipping in with a single and an RBI each were Brody Markley, Hudson Moore and Ryker Dodson.

Callaway Smith started on the mound, going two innings, giving up one run on one hit, one walk while striking out three. G. Shumate came on to go the final three innings for the win. He gave up two hits, and struck out three.
