Effingham St. Anthony edged Robinson Nuttall 1-0 in Saturday junior high baseball action.

The lone run came in the top of the first as Nuttall scored.

The winners had six hits while St. Anthony had two. Charlie Hoene and James Trupiano had a single each for the Bullpups.

Curtis Tingley suffered the tough-luck loss, going five innings on the mound, giving up one run on five hits, two walks while striking out three.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis hosted Mount Zion and Tolono Unity in baseball competition Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes fell to Mount Zion by an 8-2 tally. Mount Zion ran out to a 4-0 opening inning lead then moved that lead to 6-1 in the second as Mount Zion's Grayson Buckley homered to left field, scoring both those runs.

The Wooden Shoes had a run in the bottom of the second and tallied one more in the fourth. Derek Drees had two singles and an RBI while Jack Weber added two singles and Matt Probst had a single and an RBI.

It came down to the wire as Owen Lynch had a walk-off double that gave Teutopolis a 5-4 win over Tolono Unity in the second game.

Tolono Unity held a 3-1 opening inning lead but T-town tied in the third inning when Lynch hit his first double of the contest to tie the score at 3-3. T-town moved ahead in the fourth as a wild pitch scored the run.

Tolono Unity tied the score in the sixth at 4-4 before the Shoes won in the bottom of the seventh.

The Shoes' Lynch finished with two doubles and two RBI while Bennett Schumacher added two singles.

Blake Niemerg earned the win over Tolono Unity, coming on in the third inning, allowing three runs on two hits, no walks while striking out eight.

In a Friday contest, Teutopolis' Sam Probst collected three hits in four at-bats as the Shoes pounded Casey-Westfield by a 15-2 count in five innings.

S. Probst finished the game with three singles and drove in two runs. Bennett Schumacher had a single, double and two RBI while Blake Niemerg added a double and three RBI and Anthony Mette a double and an RBI. Grady Jansen added a single and two RBI and Gus Martin a single and an RBI.

Meanwhile, Martin picked up the win on the mound, going two innings, allowing no runs on no hits, no walks while striking out two. Three more pitchers came in to hold Casey-Westfield.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City hosted a tournament Saturday with Effingham Sacred Heart, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Mulberry Grove.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg came out the champion. Windsor/Stew-Stras opened with an 11-3 victory over Effingham Sacred Heart.

In the other first round contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City bounced Mulberry Grove 13-2.

CHBC's Kaisyn Calame began the game on the mound going three innings, allowing two runs on no hits. He walked seven and struck out seven. Cayden Ondes spelled Calame in relief, going the final two innings, giving up no runs on one hit, one walk and striking out three.

Max Kircher led the way hitting with two singles while Lance Roadarmel had a double and drove in a run. Charlie Hardimon had a single and three RBI.

In the championship contest, Windsor/Stew-Stras handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City an 11-3 loss. 

Windsor/Stew-Stras struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning and had the momentum going its way, scoring two more in the third to lead 6-1.

The Hatchets kept rolling with four more in the sixth and finished with one in the seventh for the 11-3 victory and the championship title.

WSS had 10 hits led by Richter with a single, double and two RBI, W. Friese and Wascher with two singles and an RBI each, Howe with a double and an RBI and Hartman with a single and an RBI. Gracey added an RBI.

The Bobcats were led by Calame with two singles, Ondes with a single and two RBI and Kircher with a single and an RBI.

At Altamont

Altamont's Opening Day Tournament hosted Brownstown/St. Elmo, Dieterich and Olney.

In the first contest, BSE bounced Altamont by a 17-2 tally.

Olney then took the second game by 10 runs with an 11-1 victory.

In the third place contest, Dieterich won over Altamont 9-1.

The championship went to Olney over Brownstown/St. Elmo, 10-2.

At Louisville

Altamont Lutheran tallied a 12-7 victory over North Clay (Louisville).

North Clay fell to 0-2 and returns to action Tuesday against Selmaville at 4:30 p.m.

 

At Strasburg

Charleston handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg a 14-2 defeat in five innings Friday.
