HILLSBORO -- Effingham Junior High School moved its opening baseball season record to 2-0 by pounding Hillsboro by a 13-0 count in five innings Thursday.

The Mustangs stepped out to a 6-0 opening inning lead then tallied three runs in the second and third innings and one in the fourth.

Elliott Braddy threw a one-hitter, allowing only one walk while striking out seven.

Meanwhile, Effingham had 10 hits led by Braden Jones with two singles and four RBI, Braddy with two singles and three RBI, Coen Westjohn with a triple, Balin Garris with a triple and Eli Wendling with an RBI.

Hilsboro had only one hit with six errors and gave up eight walks.

At Effingham

The Effingham Sacred Heart Shamrocks scored seven runs in the first inning as they downed St. John's, 11-2 Thursday.

A series of walks led to a seven-run first inning. Mason Karolewicz earned the win for the Shamrocks. He allowed one hit and one run over 1 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one. Gabe Traub, Rubin Jansen and Lucas McDevitt each came on in relief for the Sharmcosk and shut down the  St. John's Eagles.

Traub, Karolewicz and Lucas McDevitt had two hits each  The Shamrocks collected eight walks in the game.

Sacred Heart returns to action Saturday at the Beecher City Tournament. The Shamrocks meet Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 11 a.m. and the winner advances to the championship game at 3 p.m. while the loser will play for third at 1 p.m. In the opening game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meets Mulberry Grove at 9 a.m.

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis took a 2-0 opening inning lead and went on to down Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg by a 12-3 tally Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes finished with 10 hits led by Jack Weber with two singles and an RBI and Blake Niemerg with two singles. Derek Drees, Owen Lynch and Sam Probst had a single and two RBI each. Kale Goeckner and Gus Martin had a single and an RBI each.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Vonderheide with two singles, Pruemer with a double and Richter with a single and an RBI.

T-town had five pitchers. Grayson Schmidt finished with the victory, going the first three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, two walks and striking out four.

North Clay (Louisville) fell to Richland County, Olney by a 17-9 count Thursday.

North Clay is back in action today against Altamont Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.
