Shelby Co. Post 611 Wins Gator Classic

Shelby County Senior Legion Post 611 won the Gator Classic Tournament.

TRENTON -- Shelby County Legion Post 611 captured the championship of the Gator Classic tournament, hosted by Trenton during the weekend.

Shelby County edged Aviston Express, 4-3 Friday in a quarterfinal contest. Shelby County edged out to a 3-2 opening inning lead and tacked on another run in the third. Aviston Express came back with a run in the fourth but that was the last time the squad scored.

Jackson Gurgel was the winner on the mound. He went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks while striking out three. Connor Manhart came in to finish out three innings, giving up two hits while striking out two.

Ben Bridges and Manhart finished with two singles and a RBI each. 

In Saturday's contest, Shelby County again took a one-run victory, this one a 7-6 win over Aviston Conductors.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 in the first inning before Shelby County taliled four runs in the second to take control then had to hold off Aviston for the victory.

Shelby County had 12 hits led by Manhart with three singles and two RBI, Tyler Wetherell with a single, double and an RBI and Kaden Koeberlein and Carter Chaney with two singles and an RBI each. Gurgel added two singles.

Koeberlein went four innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks.

In the championship game Sunday, Shelby County pounded Trenton 10-4.

Shelby County edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead. Trenton tied in the top of the third but Shelby County regained the lead with two in the bottom of the frame. Trenton tied again in the top of the fourth but Shelby County went on a tear, scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on a final run in the sixth.

Shelby County had 10 hits led by Wetherell with a single, double, triple and three RBI, Bridges two singles, a double and three RBI and Gurgel with a double and an RBI.

Nathan Trimble went four innings to pick up the victory, allowing four runs on four hits, one walk while striking out five.

Shelby County now sports a 6-1 record.
