Bulldogs Edge Hatchets In H.S. Baseball

STRASBURG -- Effingham St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg played through two scoreless innings before both tallied single runs in the third inning of high school baseball Wednesday.

Things were quiet through the next two innings before St. Anthony broke loose with two runs and that's where the scoring ended as the Bulldogs claimed a 3-1 victory in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

St. Anthony went up and down in order in the opening innings. Windsor/Stew-Stras' Jackson Gurgel singled to lead off the bottom of the first but was left stranded.

The Bulldogs rumbled in the second as Connor Roepke singled to start the frame. With one out, Samuel Link singled. Roepke took second and headed towards third. The rightfielder attempted to get Roepke but failed and then Link tried to head to second but was thrown out. The final out came on a grounder.

St. Anthony broke free in the third inning. With one out, Henry Brent singled and went to second on a wild pitch  With two outs, Aiden Lauritzen was hit by a pitch to take first. Brent came home on a wild pitch.

Windsor/Stew-Stras tied the score in the third. Colten Bridges singled while Carter Verdeyen followed by drawing a walk. Jackson Gurgel hit a sacrifice that advanced C. Bridges and Verdeyen. Ben Bridges hit a ball that scored Bridges on a fielder's choice.

The two teams then went through the fourth and fifth innings before St. Anthony got untracked, scoring two runs. Beau Adams led off with a single and Lauritzen was walked. Brock Fearday followed with a single to load the bases. Roepke then came through with a single that scored two runs and the Bulldogs led 3-1.

The Hatchets' Blayzz Verdeyen singled in the sixth but was thrown out on a double play. 

B. Fearday, who pitched a five-hitter, put the Hatchets down in order in the seventh, all on strikeouts. Fearday picked up the win on the mound allowing four hits, walking only one and striking out eight.

St. Anthony improved to 16-1-1 on the season and is scheduled to be back in action Friday hosting Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin at 4:30.

Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 11-6 and also is scheduled to return to play Friday hosting Cumberland in a 4:30 contest.

In a junior varsity game that lasted only three innings, the Bulldogs blanked the Hatchets, 4-0. St. Anthony stepped out to a 3-0 lead and tacked on another run in the second.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had five hits led by Eric Utz with a single, double and an RBI, Will Vonderheide a double and an RBI and Drake Brown a double.

Grady Spannagel had a single as the lone hit for Windsor/Stew-Stras.
