T-town Hands EHS 12-1 Loss, Area Baseball Roundup

Effingham High School edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead on Teutopolis in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

But the Wooden Shoes got on a roll and finished with a 12-1 victory Monday.

Spencer Fox got EHS off in the right direction with a solo home run.

But the Shoes came right back in the second inning. Austin Borries drew a leadoff walk. With one out, Evan Waldhoff singled. With two outs, Joey Niebrugge was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brett Kreke then followed with a two-RBI single and the Shoes led 2-1.

T-town added to its lead with three runs in the third. With two outs already on the board, the Shoes took advantage of another walk, this one to Mitch Koester. Then it was back-to-back doubles as Waldhoff's double brought Koester home and Garrett Gaddis doubled, scoring Waldhoff. J. Niebrugge tripled and Gaddis scored and the Shoes led 5-1.

Dawson Hoene singled to start the fourth for the Shoes. Davin Worman flew out to left field advancing Hoene. Mick Niebrugge came to bat and hit a grounder and the Hearts attempted to get Hoene out but he scored and Niebrugge was safe on the fielder's choice for the RBI.

T-town advanced its lead to 8-1 in the fifth. J. Niebrugge drew a walk but was out on a fielder's choice on a ball hit by Kreke. The Shoes then followed with back-to-back-to-back singles by Hoene, Worman and M. Niebrugge. Worman and Niebrugge got RBIs and the lead stood at 8-1.

The Shoes finished out with four more runs in the seventh. In that frame, the Shoes drew four walks, Koester had an RBI on a double and J. Niebrugge picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

T-town had 12 hits in the contest while Effingham went through five pitchers who combined to give up 12 hits and 10 walks. The Hearts also committed two errors.

Gaddis was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing six hits, two walks while striking out four.

T-town improved to 7-4 and will be back in action today against Richland County (Olney).

The Hearts fell to 8-2 and will return to play Thursday against Dieterich.

Teutopolis then edged the Hearts 5-4 in junior varsity play. The Shoes were led in hitting by Kreke with two singles and three RBI and Jake Kocher with a single and two RBI.

The Hearrts were led by Westin Hayes with a single, double and an RBI and Wade Bushue with a triple and an RBI.

At Dieterich

Dieterich held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Flora broke loose with two runs and went on for an 11-2 victory Monday.

The Wolves had two-run innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth and finished off with five in the seventh behind eight hits.

Dieterich had five hits led by Mason Lidy with two singles and an RBI. Carson Baxter added a single and an RBi.

The Maroons committed five errors in the contest and gave up five walks.

At Vandalia

Vandalia edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 8-7 in Monday action.

The Vandals took a 2-0 first inning lead. CHBC came back with a run in the third and moved into a 6-4 lead in the fourth. Vandalia tallied a run in the fifth to pull within 6-5. The Bobcats then had a run in the top of the seventh to lead 7-5. But Vandalia came back with a three-run frame that gave the Vandals the one-run victory.

CHBC outhit Vandalia by an 11-10 count. Conner Nowitzke led the Bobcats with four singles and two RBI while Wyatt Rueff added three singles and an RBI and Gage Lorton a double.
