Wooden Shoes, Hatchets, Cougars Win In Baseball

BREESE -- Teutopolis High School improved to 5-3 on the spring season by blanking Breese Mater Dei, 9-0 in high school baseball competition Tuesday.

The two teams went scoreless through the first two innings. T-town pushed into a 3-0 lead in the third then tacked on four runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

With a nine-hit attack on the offensive side, the Shoes' Logan Lawson and Davin Worman combined for 12 strikeouts and held the Knights to only two hits.

Lawson was the winning pitcher, going the first four innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out six. Worman went the final three innings, allowing no hits, one walk and also striking out six.

Austin Borries led the offensive onslaught with a single, two doubles and two RBI. Worman added a triple and an RBI while Mick Niebrugge had two singles and two RBI. Mitch Koester added a single and an RBI.

Mater Dei pitching gave up eight walks and the team committed three errors. The Knights dropped to 2-5 on the season.

T-town is back in action Saturday at St. Joseph/Ogden with a 10 a.m. doubleheader start.

At Newton

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took a 2-0 first inning lead but Newton came back to move ahead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

That's when the Hatchets went on a four-run tear in the seventh to claim a 6-3 victory Tuesday.

The Hatchets finished with eight hits led by Blayzz Verdeyen with a double and two RBI. Jackson Gurgel had three singles, Ben Bridges two singles, Connor Manhart a single and an RBI and Kendall Morris two RBI.

Jackson Gurgel went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits, three walks and striking out three. Jakob Gurgel got the final out.

Newton was led by Domonic Baltzell with two singles. Dylan Gier had a single and two RBI and Gus Bierman an RBI.

At Mulberry Grove

South Central ran out to a 6-0 opening inning lead and ended this contest in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule by an 11-0 count Tuesday.

The Cougars had eight hits led by Max Magnus with two singles and three RBI and Zane Montes with two singles and an RBI  Brody Markley added two RBI and Hudson Moore had a single and an RBI.

Garret Shumate went four innings for the pitching victory. He allowed four hits, three walks and struck out three. Luke Shumate finished out the final inning with two strikeouts.
