Cardinals Beat Pirates, Cubs Down Tigers

PITTSBURGH – Richie Palacios was the catalyst behind a 6-4 victory for the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday.

Palacios had three hits, a career best, and finished with two RBI. 

The Cardinals ran out to a 3-0 first inning lead. Alec Burleson had a bunt single and reached second on a throwing error by Pittsburgh’s catcher. Paul Goldschmidt followed with a single to centerfield and Burleson scored.

Wilson Contreras drew a walk, Arenado moved to second and Goldschmidt to third. With one out, Richie Palacious doubled to right field and both Goldschmidt and Arenado scored and the Cardinals took a 3-0 opening inning lead.

St. Louis came right back in the second, scoring two runs. With one out, Burleson and Goldschmidt drew back-to-back walks. Arenado then doubled to left and the score was 5-0.

The final run for the Cardinals came in the ninth. Andrew Knizner reached on an infield single. Palacious drew a walk and Knizner moved to second. Jordan Walker grounded into a fielder’s choice and Palacious was out at second with Knizner moving to third. Masyn Winn grounded into another fielder’s choice to third and Knizner scored.

Palacios finished with two singles and a double. It was brother against brother as Palacios’ brother Joshua had five RBI for the Pirates in the series opener Monday.

Cubs 6, Tigers 4

The Chicago Cubs beat Detroit 6-4 Wednesday behind a two-out single by Yan Gomes.

The Cubs got on the board in the second inning as Seiya Suzuki doubled to left. He advanced to third on a fly out by Yan Gomes and came home on a double by Jeimer Candelario.

The lead went to 3-0 in the third. Nico Horner had a single and Dansby Swanson drew a walk. The pair stole second and third. With two out, Cody Bellinger singled to center and both runners scored.

Nick Madrigal came up to single Yan Gomes home in the fourth and the Cubs held a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers scored four in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. But the Cubs came through with single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 6-4 victory.Happ reached base in the eighth on an infield single and stole second. Suzuki drew a walk and Gomes singled to left to score Happ.

The final run came in the ninth as Candelario drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Christopher Morel. Nick Madrigal sacrificed the runners over and Nico Hoerner hit a sacrifice fly and Candarlios scored.
