ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- St. Louis jelled with pitching and hitting Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays to pick up a 5-2 victory.

Matthew Liberatore went eight innings and didn't allow a run. He gave up only two hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out seven to improve to 2-4 on the season.
Liberatore was traded back in January from the Rays to the Cardinals. He was called up from Triple A Memphis and this was his second start.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals took a 2-0 fourth inning lead. Nolan Arenado singled before Andrew Knizner got the Cardinals into the lead with a two-run shot to left field.

St. Louis added on single runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Arenado singled again and Alec Burelson singled, bringing Arenado home.

In the seventh, Taylor Motter singled, Tommy Edman reached base on an infield single and Motter moved over to second. Lars Nootbarr hit a grounder that became a fielder's choice and Motter scored on a throwing error.

With two outs in the ninth, the Cardinals finished their scoring when Edman hit a solo shot to right field.

St. Louis finished with 11 hits and did not commit an error.
