The Cubs, whose eight-game winning streak ended with Sunday’s 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, will instead look to add relief help as they’ve closed the gap in the NL Central race.
The St. Louis Cardinals made several moves during the weekend, letting Jordan Montgomery, Chris Stratton and Jordan Hicks go.
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired reliever Jordan Hicks to reinforce their bullpen.
St. Louis got a pair of Double A minor league right-handed pitchers in Sem Robberse, a 21-year-old and Adam Kloffenstein, a 22-year-old,
Hicks would become a free agent this winter. He has struck out 59 and picked up eight saves.
The Cardinals also traded starter Jordan Montgomery and reliever Chris Stratton to Texas.
Rangers' Acquire Scherzer
The Texas Rangers acquired star right-hander Max Scherzer from the New York Mets.
While a tentative deal was struck earlier Saturday, it was contingent on Scherzer waiving a no-trade clause. One day after expressing frustration over the Mets’ trade of closer David Robertson, Scherzer approved the deal to Texas, where he’ll join the American League West-leading Rangers, who at 60-45 are one game ahead of the Houston Astros.
