Shelby Co./Stew-Stras Finishes Second at Senior Tourney

Shelby County/Stewardson-Strasburg placed second at the Fourth Division Senior Tournament.

TILTON -- Shelby County/Stewardson-Strasburg placed second place at the Fourth Division Senior Baseball Tournament, hosted by Danville Post 210 during the weekend.

SC/Stew-Stras handed Rantoul a 12-1 loss in Saturday action. Stew-Stras edged out to a 2-1 opening inning lead then had a three-run second and put the game away early with a seven-run fourth.

The winners banged out 12 hits in the contest led by Sam Vonderheide with two home runs and three RBI, Jackson Gurgel with two singles, a double and an RBI, Mason Mulvey with three singles and three RBI and Tyler Wetherell with a single, double and three RBI. Carter Chaney scored three runs.

Kendall Morris was the winning pitcher, going five innings, allowing one run on one hit, two walks while striking out seven.

Shelby County/Stewardson-Strasburg advanced to meet Shelby County/Shelbyville and picked up an 8-2 victory Saturday.

Once against Stewardson-Strasburg took the early lead, moving ahead 2-0 in the first inning. The winners then had a three-run third, scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Shelbyville outhit Stew-Stras by a 7-5 count and had two less errors but Stew-Stras kept the squad off base.

Owen Mahaffey and Vonderheide had a single and two RBI each. Four more hits were singles by four different players.

Gurgel was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing two runs on five hits, three walks and striking out one.

Danville had beaten Shelby County/Shelbyville by a 4-2 count to advance to the championship game.

Stewardson-Strasburg moved into the title contest Sunday against Danville.

Stew-Stras took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but Danville came back to tie the score in the bottom of the frame then moved ahead with three in the second and was unstopple the rest of the way, ending the contest in the sixth via the 10-run rule, 15-5.

Danville's bats were on target, outhitting Stew-Stras by a 17-5 count. The squad now moves to the State Tournament this week.

Mahaffey had the lone extra base hit for Stew-Stras with a double and drove in two runs. Ben Meinhart had two singles and an RBI.

Stewardson-Strasburg finished the summer season with an 11-4 record.
