Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby Monday.

The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, had a record-setting performance and then claimed the finals over Randy Arozarena.

Guerrero did away with Mookie Betts in the opening round. In the semifinals he beat Julio Rodriguez with 21 home runs and won the final round over Arozarena.

In 2019, Guerrero hit a record 40 home runs in the second round and finished with 91 overall but Pete Alonso of the Mets won the Home Run Derby.

This time around, Rodriguez hit 41 home runs to break the 40 home run record in a round by Guerrero. But Rodriguez ended the second round with only 20 home runs and Guerrero tallied 21.

He finished out with 25 home runs to bring his total for the event to 72 on the night. His father won the Derby in 2007 and the pair are now the first father-son combination to win the Derby.

There were a total of 341 home runs hit, more than the 312 hit in 2019. The combined distance of those home runs was 26.27 miles.

New York Yankees are turning to Sean Casey as their hitting coach.

According to the New York Post, which first reported the news, it is expected that Casey will fill the role for the remainder of the season so he can better decide if it’s a position he would like to remain in going forward.
