EHS Wins Baseball Sectional, On To Super-Sectional Today

Effingham claimed the Class 3A Centralia Sectional Saturday.

CENTRALIA -- It's on to the super-sectional for Effingham High School as the Hearts defeated Mount Vernon, 6-3 to win the Class 3A Centralia Baseball Sectional Saturday.

The Hearts opened with a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Myles Maxedon singled on a 1-1 count, to score a run. They led 2-0 after two. But Mount Vernon came back to knot the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning when D. Smith hit into a fielder's choice, that scored both runs.

The Hearts then took the lead in the fifth for good. Quest Hull doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and the Hearts ended up with a four-run fifth to lead 6-2.

The Rams came back with a single run in the bottom of the sixth but the Hearts put the game in the win column.

EHS had 12 hits in the contest led by Maxedon with three singles and three RBI, Hull with a single, double and an RBI, Evan Waymoth and Spencer Fox had two singles each while Colton Webb added a single and an RBI. John Harper also got an RBI.

Kaiden Nichols went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks and striking out seven. Harper came on to go the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out one.

Effingham moves into the Decatur Super-Sectional at Millkin University today at 6 p.m. The Hearts will face Champaign Central, who beat Rochester 4-2 to win the Lincoln Sectional The game can be heard on KJ Country 102.3.
