EHS Edges Charleston; Newton Falls In Baseball

Effingham's Josh McDevitt threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Hearts won 2-1.

OLNEY -- Effingham High School took Thursday's Class 3A Olney Regional baseball game in dramatic fashion.

The Hearts edged Charleston 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

EHS held a 1-0 first inning lead as Myles Maxedon singled home the run. They held that lead until the fourth when the Trojans scored a run to knot the score on a ground out by Aiden Archibald.

The Hearts then put a runner on base in the bottom of the eighth, Camden Raddatz singled and EHS scored the winning run.

EHS had seven hits, all singles by Maxedon, Raddatz, John Harper, Kaden Koeberlein, Quest Hull, Evan Waymoth and Spencer Fox.

Josh McDevitt kept the Trojans off the board, scattering three hits while walking only two and striking out 11.

William Applegate led the Trojans with two singles while Brett Spour had the other hit, also a single.

Effingham advances to Saturday's regional championship game against Marion at 11 a.m. Marion blanked Mattoon 2-0 in a game Wednesday.

The winner advances to the Centralia Sectional Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to face the winner of the Jerseyville Jersey Regional, either Troy Triad or Highland.

The opening contest will feature the winners of the Mount Vernon and Mascoutah regionals at 4 p.m.

Class 2A Breese Central Sectional

Newton saw its season come to a close at the Breese Central Sectional Thursday.

The Eagles fell to Columbia by a 10-0 count.

Columbia advances to the championship game Saturday and will meet Glen Carbon Father McGivney at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday for a 2 p.m. contest.
