Hearts Take Game One of City Series

The Effingham Hearts broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning on their way to an 8-1 win in the opening baseball game of City Series 2023. The game at Paul Smith Field at Community Park was heard on Classic Hits 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

St. Anthony had scored a run in the top of the fourth on a leadoff walk to Aiden Lauritzen who then came around to score.

Effingham responded with their big inning, all after two were out. A walk to Camden Raddatz, back to back singles by Colten Webb and Evan Waymoth and three straight walks to Kaidyn Nichols, Spencer Fox and Kaden Koeberlein were followed by a single by Jack Harper and the Hearts held a 6-1 lead. 

Effingham added two runs in the fifth when Myles Maxedon was hit by a pitch, followed by a double by Camden Raddatz and a single by Colten Webb to give the Hearts a seven-run lead.

Josh McDevitt brought the heat on the mound for Effingham, with pitches hitting 96MPH. McDevitt allowed just two hits, but did hit three batters and walked two. McDevitt struck out 12 hitters, then had to leave after six innings due to the pitch count rule. Camden Raddatz pitched the final inning, retiring the Bulldogs in order and picking up a strikeout.

Brock Jansen held the Hearts scoreless until the fourth. Jansen went 3-2/3 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on five hits, walking five and striking out two. Aiden Lauritzen went 1-1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, hitting a batter and fanning two. Samuel Link pitched the final inning, hitting a batter along with one strikeout.

Effingham won its seventh game to improve to 15-11 on the season while St. Anthony suffered just their fourth loss against 21 wins.
