Effingham St. Anthony had a four-run sixth to overtake Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 6-5 in high school baseball action Wednesday in a game heard on 979XFM.

The two teams played through the first two innings without a run. Tyler Wetherell reached base for the Hatchets in the first inning on a single but was left on base.

St. Anthony had two on in the second as Connor Roepke singled and Max Koenig doubled, but they were left stranded.

The Hatchets then dented the scoreboard with two runs in the third. With two outs on strikeouts, Austin Wittenberg and Carter Chaney had back-to-back singles. Wetherell then singled home a run and Jordan Wittenberg followed with an RBI single and the Hatchets led 2-0.

But the Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 2-2. Will Hoene reached on an error but was thrown out on a fielder's choice on a ball hit by Ryan Schmidt. With two outs, Eli Levitt hit a ball that went for a fielder's choice that scored Schmidt. An error put Levitt at second. He then came home on a double by Brock Fearday.

Kendal Morris drew a walk for WSS in the fourth but Fearday got the next three batters on strikeouts.

The Hatchets came back to score two runs in the fifth. A. Wittenberg drew a walk to start the frame and stole second. Carter Chaney singled and ended up with a stolen base at second. With two on second and third, Wetherell followed with a single that scored both runs for a 4-2 lead.

WSS added another run in the sixth to lead 5-2. With two outs, A. Wittenberg singled and Chaney followed with a single.

But, here came St. Anthony. Roepke started the inning, reaching base on an error. WSS then got the next two outs before Brock Jansen reached on a fielder's choice. Will Hoene singled and Ryan Schmidt doubled. Beau Adams doubled home two runs and when the dust cleared, the Bulldogs held a 6-5 lead.

Windsor/Stew-Stras wasn't out of it yet in the seventh. With one out, Jackson Gurgel drew a walk and Kendall Morris followed with a single. But a pop out was the second dent. Colten Bridges was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But the final out came on a strikeout by Eli Levitt.

Fearday finished allowing eight hits, four walks and striking out nine for the win on the mound.

St. Anthony improved to 16-2 on the season while Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 11-4.

In a junior varsity game, St Anthony was a 3-1 winner over Windsor/Stew-Stras.

The Bulldogs tallied a run in the second and two in the third. WSS had its lone run in the fourth.

Sam Link had a single and double for the Bulldogs while Ethan Karolewicz had a double and an RBI. JC Trupiano added an RBI.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Xander Beals with a double and an RBI.

At Kinmundy

Effingham High School watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 4-2 loss to South Central Wednesday.

The Cougars got things started in the first inning when Brody Markley drew a walk, scoring one run and when the inning ended they held a 3-0 lead.

South Central tacked on another run in the second.

Effingham mounted a comeback in the third wih two runs. The two teams were then quiet the rest of the way.

South Central had only three hits led by Aidan Dodson with a double, Anthony Buonaura a single and an RBI and Markley an RBI.

The Hearts had four hits led by Quest Hull with two singles and an RBI and Kaden Koeberlein and Max Seachrst with a single each. John Harper had an RBI.

Buonaura was the winning pitcher, going three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks and one strikeout. Smith went the final four innings allowing one hit and three walks.

At Kinmundy

At Neoga

Neoga improved to 10-12 on the season with a 6-3 win over Martinsville Wednesday.

The Indians held a 2-0 first inning lead, then tacked on two more in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth.

Neoga had eight hits led by Josiah Gentry with a single, double and an RBI and Quintin Richards with two singles and an RBI. Trey Sheehan, Ryan Koester and Brady Reynolds with a single each. Koester and Reynolds had an RBI each.

Five pitchers threw for the Indians with Kyle Will the winner, going 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out five.

At Neoga

Charleston edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead on Altamont and went on for the 5-1 victory Wednesday.

The Trojans tallied two more in the third and one in the sixth.

The Indians had four hits led by Jared Hammer with a double and Kienon Eirhart with a single and an RBI.

Charleston had six hits in the game led by Aidan Archibald with a single, home run and three RBI and James Hess with a single and triple. Alec Sellers added a single and an RBI.

Archibald was the winning pitcher, coming on in the third inning, going three frames, allowing one hit and striking out two.
