North Clay/Clay City High School took the early lead and never relinquished it in a 12-4 baseball victory over Effingham Thursday in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Cardinals edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead as Logan Fleener hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run. North Clay/Clay City led 4-1 after two innings.

The Hearts came back with single runs in the second, third and fourth to pull within 4-3.

But North Clay/Clay City tallied a run in the fifth then put the game away with a seven-run seventh. Daniel Warren, Alex Boose, Fleener, Ayden Jones, Carder Walden and Trenton Ingram all drove in runs in the frame.

The Cardinals outhit Effingham by a 13-5 count. Cody Zimdars had two singles and a double while Fleener had a single, double and an RBI. Warren added two singles and three RBI, Ingram had two singles and an RBI and Ian Jones had two singles.

Jack Compton was the winning pitcher, going 2.1 innings allowing two runs on one hit, one walk and striking out one. North Clay/Clay City improved to 9-3 on the season.

Effingham was led by Kaden Koeberlein with two singles and two RBI and Spencer Fox with a triple.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Salt Fork and blanked the visitors by a 10-0 count in five innings Thursday.

The Bulldogs scored six runs in the second inning, tacked on three in the third and ended the game with one in the fifth.

Brock Jansen threw a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Eli Levitt had two singles, a home run and three RBI while Beau Adams had a single and a solo home run. B. Fearday added a single, double and an RBI. Ryan Schmidt had a double and drove in three runs.

At Mulberry Grove

Brownstown/St. Elmo improved to 5-4 on the season with a 4-2 victory over Mulberry Grove Thursday.

BSE opened with a 1-0 first inning lead then led 2-1 after six and finished out with a 2-1 final inning.

Adam Atwood and Wyatt Forbes both went two-for-four at the plate with two singles each. Forbes added an RBI. Lane Stine had a single and an RBI.

Jarrett Pasley went 6.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits, one walk while keeping Mulberry Grove off balance with 11 strikeouts.

Brownstown/St. Elmo is back in action Saturday at the Red Hill (Bridgeport) Round Robin. The Bombers will face Red Hill at 10 a.m. and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at noon.

At Toledo

Neoga improved its record to 7-8 on the season with a 4-2 victory over Cumberland Thursday.

The Pirates held a 1-0 first inning lead and pushed that to 2-0 in the third.

But Neoga tied the score in the fourth and moved ahead for good in the fifth.

Both teams had five hits but Cumberland finished with seven errors.

Bryar Hennesay had two doubles and drove in two runs while Ryan Koester had a double.

Trey Sheehan was the winning pitcher, going three innings on the hill, not allowing a run or hit.

Cumberland was led by Trevin Magee with two singles. Ty Bradley had a single and drove in a run.

Teutopolis pushed its record to 7-3 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Dieterich Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes took the opening inning lead by a 2-1 count. Dieterich tied in the third and the score was again tied, this time at 3-3 in the fifth.

T-town got the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Evan Waldhoff had a single and a double for the Shoes while Bennet Thompson had a double and two RBI. Mitch Jansen hit a single and drove in two runs.

Logan Lawson went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, no walks and striking out eight. But Ben Goeckner came on for the victory, going two innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out one.

Dieterich was led by Jaxon Funneman with a single, double and an RBI and Garrett Niebrugge with two singles.

The Movin' Maroons dropped to 3-8 on the season.

South Central's Anthony Buonaura went six innings on the mound to pick up an 8-0 victory over Greenville at GCS Ballpark Thursday.

Buonaura allowed three hits, three walks while stirking out nine in the contest.

He also aided the cause offensively with two singles and an RBI. The Cougars took a 2-0 first inning lead, had a two-run fifth and a four-run sixth.

Chase Thompson had two singles while Zane Montes had a single and drove in two runs. Aidan Dodson and Andrew Magnus had a single and an RBI each.

Carder Reich threw a one-hitter, going all seven innings, as Newton blanked Marshall by a 6-0 count Thursday.

Reich struck out 16 while allowing only one walk in the contest.

Newton ran off to a 3-0 first inning lead and tacked on three more in the fourth.

The Eagles had eight hits led by Payton Harris with three singles and an RBi, David Ferguson with two singles and an RBI and Gage Reynolds with two RBI.
