St. Anthony Beats Mattoon, EHS Drops DH; Baseball Roundup

With a 12-hit attack, Effingham St. Anthony downed Mattoon 13-3 in high school baseball Tuesday.

The Bulldogs moved into a 3-0 first inning lead and finished out the contest in five innings via the 10-run rule.

The long ball was in evidence as seven of St. Anthony's total hits were for extra bases including two home runs. Brock Jansen had a double, home run and three RBI while Eli Levitt had a single, home run and three RBI.

Brock Fearday banged out two doubles and drove in two runs while Beau Adams had a single and double and Max Koenig a double and an RBI. Will Fearday finished with a single and drove in two runs and Connor Roepke had a single and an RBI.

Jansen was the winning pitcher, going all five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, three walks and striking out six.

In junior varsity play, Mattoon captured a 10-6 win. The Green Wave held a 4-1 lead. St. Anthony pulled within 4-3 in the third. Both teams scored three runs in the fourth. Mattoon finished out with a three-run seventh.

Ryan Schmidt hit a home run for the Bulldogs and finished with three RBI. Henry Brent had three singles and Nick Ruholl had a triple.

At Mount Zion

Effingham fell in an Apollo Conference doubleheader to Mount Zion Tuesday.

The Braves won the opener 5-3. The Braves fired up their offense in the second inning with one run on an error. The Braves pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth.

Mount Zion had nine hits in the game while the Hearts tallied four. John Harper had two of those hits, a single and double. Quest Hull added a double and Myles Maxedon had a single and an RBI.

In the second game, Mount Zion moved ahead 1-0 in the first but the Hearts tied in the fourth. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Braves came back with three in the bottom of the fifth for the 4-1 victory.

Effingham again struggled offensively against Mount Zion pitchers with only four hits. Harper, again had two of the four hits with two singles.

S. Driscoll went six innings for the Braves allowing one run on three hits, one walk while stumping the Hearts with 11 strikeouts.

In a junior varsity game, Mount Zion edged Effingham by a 5-4 count.

The Hearts led 3-1 after two innings before Mount Zion moved ahead 4-3 in the fourth. The Hearts tied the score in the fifth but Mount Zion won in the sixth.

The Braves had 10 hits in the game while Effingham had only three. Nolan Fearday led the way for EHS with a single and double while K. Koester added a double and an RBI. M. Flack had an RBI.

At Altamont

Altamont's Jared Hammer threw a one-hitter as the Indians blanked Brownstown/St. Elmo, 10-0 in five innings Tuesday.

Hammer went the five innings, allowing one walk while striking out seven.

Meanwhile, the Indians had 11 hits in the contest led by Hammer with a single, double and an RBI and Nathan Stuemke, Eli Miller and Logan Cornett with a single and two RBI each and Kienon Eirhart, Wyatt Phillips and Nathan Shepard with a single and an RBI each. Three other players had a single each.

Jarrett Pasley had the lone hit for the Bombers with a single. BSE dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Teutopolis put together four runs in the third and three runs in the fifth and went on for an 8-1 victory over Richland County Tuesday.

Joey Niebrugge led the offense for the Wooden Shoes with a single, double and three RBI. Mitch Jansen added a double while Caleb Bloemer had two singles. Brett Kreke had a single and two RBI and Evan Waldhoff an RBI.

Garrett Gaddis was the winner on the mound, going five innings, allowing no runs on two hits and seven strikeouts. T-town improved to 3-2.

Richland County had four hits and committed four errors. The Tigers dropped to 1-5.

Charleston took a 3-1 lead in the third inning and tacked on six in the fourth for a 9-1 win over Neoga Tuesday.

The lone run for the Indians came in the third inning.

Neoga had two hits in the contest while the Trojans countered with 12.

Colin Blazich had a double for Neoga. Trey Sheehan had the lone RBI.

Newton came calling and blanked North Clay (Louisville), 5-0 Tuesday.

The Eagles took a 2-0 first inning lead and tallied single runs in the second, fourth and sixth.

Newton had four hits led by Payton Harris with a double. David Ferguson and Isaac Flowers had a single and drove in a run each.

Brandon Einhorn went all seven innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out nine.

Jacob Hoyt had a dobule and Alex Boose a single for the Cardinals who fall to 5-3 on the season.
